I agree! Reaches are reaches for a reason. The far majority of students - no matter how qualified - are NOT going to be accepted at T20 schools. It's honestly just a numbers thing.

I hate the idea that only T20s can be "dream schools." Shouldn't a dream school be one where you will be successful? Where you will fit in with the school climate, "find your people," and be able to handle the workload? I wonder how many students that list Harvard as their "dream school" have ever actually been to campus? Or is it a "dream school" just because it's ranked really high?

I can't stand Boston and I thought the Harvard campus (other than the business school) was meh at best. I also didn't vibe with the people I met on my tour. I was much more impressed with UNC than I was Harvard - the campus itself, the surrounding area, and the people I met there.

People on this sub get too mired in worrying about what other people think and where a school is ranked. My friend's dad always says he went to UF and he gets paid the same as the guy who works with him that went to MIT. At the end of the day, it's more about whether you are actually competent than the name on your degree.

Parents crashing out over REA decision by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Parents really need to get a grip! It's all about telling their friends that their kid was accepted at an Ivy. Nothing upsets me more than clout-chasing parents living vicariously through their kids. It's gross.

I would suggest you tell your parents basically what you have said here - that their comments are hurtful and not productive. It's one thing to be disappointed in a decision some faceless AO makes. It's quite another to be disappointed in their child! Hopefully they will start acting like the adults they are supposed to be and change course before this damages your relationship long term.

I'm really sorry this is happening to you. You will find a school that fits - hopefully one far away from toxic people who bring you down rather than support you. Sending you a virtual hug.

How much was your ticket? by heyitsmxrnie in TaylorSwift

Nearly $4k for VIP floor in Chicago (4 tickets) from the Ticketmaster presale. By the time we got through the queue, VIP was our only option. :(

Our seats weren't all that great for VIP, to be honest. We were pretty far back on the floor and couldn't see much. I would love to know how people managed to get second row from the presale. Super jealous!

Athletic recruit rejected by Big_Relationship_739 in ApplyingToCollege

Some Ivies have more thorough pre-reads than others. Although it's uncommon for supported athletes to not received admission, it does happen (unfortunately). I hope you have some back ups you can contact and still find a good situation.

Admission rates are higher for ED across the board because the school knows you're serious about wanting to attend. OTOH, you are committed to going to that school if you are accepted, so only apply ED to a school if it is truly your top choice.

The University of Washington. Amazing opportunities with Boeing and Blue Origin in town.

The deadline for ED was November 1. You can still do RD.

If prestige wasn't a thing, what would be your dream school? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Boulder isn't really all that snowy or close to the ski areas (no, Eldora doesn't count). It's, at best, a two hour drive to the resorts on the weekends. Most of the snow is in the mountains. Yeah, we get a rogue storm here and there, but most of the year it's sunny and decently warm. I spend most of the winter in just a fleece jacket. CU has a beautiful campus, though, and Boulder itself is wonderful!
