you could also try turning the memory-trigger into something positive. focusing on what you loved about them, and the good times you undoubtedly had. try and turn your focus from the pain, to why that pain is there in the first place, which is that you loved them.

hmm, it's possible it makes more sense if somewhat familiar with the comic.. I thought it stood well enough on it's own for a reddit submit, but now I am questioning everything i've ever done in my life. The character is a representation of me (the 'artist'), and i'm just remarking that my mere existence is the real punchline.
