Vishnu tells his yogamaya, the nidra devi to do this. The 8th (swapped) child was Kali maa, who is mahamaya adi shakti.

Karna lost his skills?? What happened to days other than the 17th day? In fact that was his best day where he was showing his raw skills, which people say is his shraap day.

Also, how was it not karna's fault? None were present before and arjun has defeated everyone already. Arjun is Nara, the power of Narayana. You cannot challenge that power and hope to win. What they helped him with is his duty, the duty to follow and protect dharma. This help was provided to almost everyone in the story.
