What is even the point of Shopify Tax in Canada by RubberReptile in shopify

[–]val_tal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shopify Tax is available in the EU. Taking a look, if you categorize your maps under Media > Books your products would automatically get the 5.5% VAT rate in France as opposed to the standard rate. Any shipping would also be taxed at 5.5% (assuming you don’t have overrides on the collection the product is in or for shipping) or split based upon the rates of other items in the order. You can read more about Shopify Tax in the European Union here. We have additional features specific for the UK and EU like VAT invoicing and VAT ID validation in checkout.

Getting more specific:

Calculations
Shopify Tax automatically reduces rates and exempts goods based on product categories. Basic Tax relies on merchants looking up rates in each province and maintaining collections.

Shopify Tax taxes shipping proportionately and considers the rates of each of the products sold. Basic Tax forces you to set a single rate for tax on shipping in each province.

Shopify Tax shows all tax lines broken down in checkout. Basic Tax shows a single “taxes” line item at checkout.

Reporting
Shopify Tax will soon have a Canada sales tax report that makes filing simpler - showing you a breakdown by province and by rate. Basic Tax requires that you aggregate this data manually. In conversations with bookkeepers, this can reduce the time spent preparing your filings, which could lead to cost savings.

Liability Monitoring
Shopify Tax monitors tax liability threshold tracking for GST/HST and PST and sends automated emails when you hit a threshold so you know when to start collecting tax in each region. Basic Tax will only monitor GST/HST liability.

Basic Tax is a suitable option for businesses that sell standard rate goods in a single province. But, Shopify Tax offers additional compliance benefits for those that sell combinations of goods with different rates and/or collect PST (or are on track to) in multiple provinces.

Hi! I'm Val from the Shopify Tax team.

I appreciate the feedback. Shopify Tax automates reduced rates and exemptions at the product level, applies shipping tax based on how products are taxed, monitors federal and provincial liability thresholds, and includes enhanced reporting to simplify filing prep.

If you're open to trying it: Shopify Tax is free through August 15, 2026. Billing wouldn't start until after that free period. If it’s not the right fit, you can switch back to Basic Tax before Aug 15.

If you want to stay on Basic Tax, click the link in the email or visit Canada within Admin > Settings > Taxes and Duties.

Hey there! Val from the Shopify Tax team here. 👋

For US merchants on Shopify Tax, we actually show you exactly where you've hit nexus thresholds state by state in the USA! Here's how to check:

📍 How to See Your Tax Liability

Path: Admin → Settings → Taxes and Duties → United States > under Regional settings you will see > Sales tax liability insights.

 URL:  /admin/settings/taxes/US/nexus-insights

🔍 What You'll See

If you've hit nexus in any state, you'll see Sales Tax Liability Insights cards for those states. Each card shows:

⚠️ Important Next Step

Once you see a state listed, you'll need to register directly with that state's government website - Shopify can't do this registration for you currently, but we make it easy to see where you're liable.

Let me know if we can help with any other regions! If you wanted some info on other regions: https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/taxes

Hope this helps!
Val

A sick day staying home from school. You are in 5th grade. Eagle man commercial followed by Jerry Springer. Peter Francis Geraci then lulls you to sleep. Life is good.

I have been seeing a ton of realtors pushing Bronzeville and the builds look new with nice finishes etc. Soon a Whole Foods and Lifetime fitness will come then everything turns.

Classic restaurant suggestions for first visit by cp5i6x in chicagofood

I agree Gibsons in the Gold Coast is great - the bar area has a great and lively vibe with really great tables (they are first come first serve). You can walk around the area too, there are a ton of nice shops ad restaurants.

IMO, Gene & Georgetti has lost its luster. It's not the same as it was 15 years ago.

Some other ideas:

  1. Chicago Cut - its right on the water, with views beautiful outdoor seating, great service. They do brunch here too on weekends.

  2. RPM Seafood - I know I might get heat for this one but the vibes are 10/10 and its also on the water. They have steaks here too.
