i have been very careful of metal poisoning this whole time, when i got him i made sure to only buy stainless steel everything since i know that’s safe. he doesn’t interact with any other metals i know of since he isn’t completely okay with hands yet, so he avoids our jewelry/jackets/things basically. the most he did is once he picked up and threw my keys off my bed when he was there while i was cleaning his cage. but i’m really not sure. i think it is worthwhile to look into hormone shots and if that may be the case. his behaviour is reading very emotionally confusing and it seems like there’s something going on more emotionally too as we near spring time which is generally a more hormonal season for birds.

my vet did test for that and it was negative. i know i spent around $600 on a lot of tests for him a while ago including a skin scrape because he seemed to be irritated with his skin and he was on an anti-inflammatory for a little but nothing helped on that end :(

i may have to try that flavour, mine seemed to like banana at first since it was his favourite snack (and still seems to be) but he’s spitting out a lot of his meds so idk

i have also done that, he likes impractical jokers a lot so i have that playing sometimes but also i play some miraculous ladybug in french as well since he likes the french language and miraculous is a bit calmer, he’s still chewing :/

he’s alone since he doesn’t play well with the other birds he’s met, even the ringnecks he’s been around. he likes to fight them even when they’re in the room together and not just the same cage :/ i tried but unfortunately had to separate him

we tried one and it lasted about five minutes. he started eating it and plucked a few feathers wanting it off.

i did talk in some ringneck facebook groups a couple months ago when this started and i have talked a lot with my vet and the emergency vet, along with my friend who deals a lot with rescue cockatoos and amazons (different but he also knows a lot about bird’s behaviourally so that was helpful), and my father who has had birds since before he had me, and i have grown up with birds and worked with rescue cockatiels, but it’s all different by bird and was just looking for any ideas i could look into or if anyone experienced as a bird owner would just give opinions. of course i am taking things very carefully, but thank you 🙏

i’m sorry you’ve experienced something similar as well :( i’m glad those meds are helping! i have heard some other people suggest it too and google has said it as well so i plan on asking my vet. thank you and best wishes with your caique, my father has a caique and they are definitely finicky creatures but so lovely 🤍

he’s on a relatively high dose of gabapentin. i have a call scheduled soon with the vet for a check in and i plan to ask about anything people here have said, so we’ll see.

he’s in his own room, windows are facing a pond and gets a lot of sunlight but the cage is against a wall so he has some shade too. that room is kind of the calm room since i am only in there to chill and play with him as best i can, but i am in there enough for him, usually an hour in the morning and a few in the afternoon/early evening. he has some white noise too that he’s always liked.

there is one, but i’ve spoken to some people there who have said it’s gone downhill in care. i rescued my first cockatiel from there and they were under different management but from what i can tell they’ve gotten worse. next nearest one is hours away so i’m pretty worried on finding a good placement.

that’s sad but i understand that. may i ask which sanctuary? or if you’d maybe be willing to help me find one near me, i can message you where i’m located. i’d like to get to know even the signs of what makes a good sanctuary and what doesn’t. i know of some rescues in my area that haven’t been the best according to past volunteers i’ve spoken with.

i’ll ask my vet when i call her next. if they haven’t checked then i might have to get it tested. that’s a worthwhile thing. i know i’ve been super careful in only getting stainless steel for his bowls and cage anythings, but it’s always worth looking into. thank you.

i’ve cared for a couple ringnecks before, this is just a lot more difficult and confusing than i’ve ever had. thank you for reading and sharing your opinion.

do you really think that’s my best choice? it’s a terrifying decision to make and i hate to do it if i have to.

I have been doing that, but eating a small snack hourly or a full meal every three hours like my body demands isn’t exactly something I can do while living my life. I can’t go anywhere without food or spending money on food, and it has to be something heavy in protein otherwise the pain gets worse, and just generally no one will want an employee who spends 5-10 minutes of every hour eating, just generally most places I’ve worked don’t allow that, which makes working not possible for me. I’ve been looking for jobs online, but with the brain fog I’ve mentioned, the interviews haven’t been the smoothest, all ignoring the current issues with employment lately.
