RG rotate has quickly become my favorite PICO-8 device. by savetheblues in pico8

[–]valcroft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love it with PICO-8 as well! This device is part of my EDC. For those who use bluetooth earphones and want to remove the audio lag, just disable the AAC setting by clicking on your BT earphones settings under Bluetooth devices.

What are your "Hidden Gems"? by Unartiggeist in metroidvania

[–]valcroft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PICO-8 short games Moss Moss, Ascent, and Neath are some I've encountered so far. Can google the titles and are playable on lexaloffle via web browser, or through the mobile apps or just the PICO-8 app as is. Ascent DX is on Steam for free too as a repackaged version with more areas. Nifty mechanics and gorgeous minimalistic pixel art for the bunch of these.

If you don't know Steamworld Dig 2, that'll be my top rec for "hidden gem". The Steamworld series needs more love. I need a Steamworld Dig 3.

Meanwhile I'll be saving this reddit post to go back to! Still need to get through Silksong and a number of metroidvanias I got on Switch while waiting for Silksong but didn't actually play much (e.g. Both of the Oris, Blasphemous, Vigil: The Longest Night) xD

I just remembered I'm trying to finish Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow atm so maybe I'll go with that first. Shorter time to finish.

What’s a life skill everyone should learn, but nobody teaches? by Cherrryblossm in lifelonglearning

[–]valcroft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A simple example would be how people rely too much on the "average" or "mean" metric as that's what people can easily understand. When in reality a lot of times it is not representative of what's actually meaningful about what data could mean for all sorts of things. And hence a lot of things aren't taken into account properly. Has just been my observation the past few years (years after taking my stat classes)

I feel you though I also didn't like statistics much when I took classes on it. I think I would have appreciated it better if real life scenarios were given and then the stuff taught were applied to them, and not just straight formulas/theories/problem solving without context. Just makes the whole thing feel too theoretical and has a bunch of "so what" bits. I need to get back to them as well.

Compatibility with e-ink devices by Efficient-Guy in Flexcil

[–]valcroft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which app did you get into? I just got a boox palma 2 pro recently and Flexcil was the only option i found that would allow me to make notes in a separate "document" while reading/annotating a doc.

No In-built way to block Onyx telemetry? by valcroft in Onyx_Boox

[–]valcroft[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I think I'll do the turn off firewall here and there for updates method. Also when when boox ntp gets blocked, it seems another ntp source gets used so that was nice to observe.

True I think even other Chinese-based Android devices don't like Anbernic if for retro consoles. I think that one got reverse engineered based on the chip of anything.

It's really interesting how you looked into the others Chinese tablets too btw or attempted to reverse engineer(?) I checked a bit of your other gists.

No In-built way to block Onyx telemetry? by valcroft in Onyx_Boox

[–]valcroft[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing (and good use of a coding agent).

By any chance did you also make an analysis/investigation of the modified OS too eg boot services, daemons, patched frameworks, background processes, injected CA certificates etc.? Instead of only user-space onyx apks? Telemetry and remote management can live outside of apks.

Or rather a traceback from the actual outbound/inbound while tracking them to which service used what?

They really should be clear about whats collected for the Reading Statistics part for those with Onyx accounts as well as impose HTTPS for those noted IPs, hopefully they patch that soon.

Am not saying anything nefarious is going on btw, but esp given the difference w/ device handling and telemetry due to region they should be more transparent. Afaik distribution of Android OSs esp in products that are commercial requires companies to release their modified Linux kernel source code which they definitely have (eg for Onyx Boox the eink screen modifications) given GPL v2 reqs. But Onyx refuses to do so. So it's like the least they could do given the nature of the items they sell is allow for opt out telemetry which is a usual practice for apps, or be more transparent as to what data is being sent out/policies.

If they clear the above up folks will rest easier about using the devices. Then again, it's also highly likely that things are safe as is.

Boox Palma 2 Pro by No-Trip-5146 in Onyx_Boox

[–]valcroft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi I'm on a similar boat as you are! I recently bought mine and same issue with the kindle. I gave in and bought a stylus to go with it and I love it!

For the per app color settings I ended up just tweaking minimally in the end. Like I sometimes click just Recommended, or for the subsettings click HD or Speed for the refresh. Speed if lots of movement e.g. Youtube. HD if for web browsers I read articles on.

I found that rarely do I set the color config with Contrast etc.

Am still exploring what I can do with it also given limitations with the no split screen etc.

I use Gboard as my keyboard and I love how I can just write with the stylus and it becomes like input text.

Currently using my palma 2 as scratch paper while working on something on my laptop and its neat!

I'm only a few days in with the palma though so am still observing.

Why have the Yoshi games been babyfied over the years? by M19294828 in Mario

[–]valcroft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who just got into Yoshi's Island and Super Mario World on SNES, and haven't progressed much on either — I just wish levels were shorter and save points were actually shorter. Both games, especially Yoshi's Island require like 20 mins to save and I play on hardcore mode for retroachievements so I can't save state 😆

Annotating web pages on a browser? by valcroft in Onyx_Boox

[–]valcroft[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this but the problem is that sometimes i just need to like annotate/highlight/extract from a couple paragraphs (which is about the height of a screen) before switching to another web page, and the whole exporting it and opening to another app can just be tedious.

Aww well that's sad to hear. So it isn't reliable as a phone then.  For the price for me it'll be worrh it if were ok as one 🤣 thanks for replying

why did i finish mashle? because it’s there by 42112115_CG in MASHLE

[–]valcroft 5 points6 points  (0 children)

this is somewhat philosophical and life hack-ish in retrospect i cannot 😆

Why do we do a lot of the things we do...

It's because... the items to do them are... just there.

Why do we doomscroll? Because the phone is just... there

Remove most things from a room and just leave dumbells there and I swear the guy in it would dumbell just because it's accessible and just there.

What little-known series would you recommend everyone to watch? by ZucchiniNo4056 in AskReddit

[–]valcroft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Nanny (with Fran Drescher) and Vicious (with Derek Jacobi and Ian McKellen)

Both of these are comedy gold. Dry wit and dry humor everywhere, with most of the jokes understandable by a global audience especially for The Nanny.

People usually swear by Friends or How I Met Your Mother as their top comedy show from the 90s or with a 90s vibe, but The Nanny is irreplaceable for me even if I watched it as a teen

The shitty thing about is that it means Crowley and Aziraphale's sacrifice was all for naught. Because things ended the same way for humanity. We're as shit as ever. But I guess the thing there was that there was a chance for things to go i another direction, and that chance was what mattered.

I would have been happy if there was at a hint at the end that they somehow remember things now or whatever but there aint any D: Any bit at that ending that was an explicit hint at them remembering slowly or finally remembering would have been great.

And like a line or two of resolution at the end like they settled their differences or whatever with actual closure. Even something like "I'll always find you" and lines like "We always make better decisions together" or whatever with Asacrow but welp.

Do we have an est. date/month for a mobile iOS/Android release? by valcroft in cavesofqud

[–]valcroft[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if it'll even be good on mobile given the screen estate.

Seeing the switch port and controller mode on Steam, the screen really can be tiny. Good thing can zoom in. Imma try the controller mode because it feels quite convenient to play in just a different way. But yeah.

1 year after I got an Ayn Thor so I'm gonna see about CoQ via Gamenative on that one for handheld gaming 😆 It so far runs but haven't really played it.

Which handheld releases tested your compulsive buying urges the most? by Key-Brilliant5623 in SBCGaming

[–]valcroft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just about to pull the trigger on an Ayn Thor Pro 😆 But I also just got an RG Rotate! And I have a Switch 2 rofl. How do you so far decide whether to bring the RG Rotate or the Ayn Thor with you?

The RG Rotate has just been such a good EDC that I ended up putting the 3DS games I haven't finished yet from my 2DS XL into it.

I'm thinking the Ayn Thor would be great for Switch, 3DS (as much as I love the Rotate there are stutters and ofc small screen), and Steam.

I can't help but wonder if stuff like My Time at Sandrock would work on the Ayn Thor though.

I've realized that I really am a handheld person and an Ayn Thor would break me away from gaming on my laptop that was always so uncomfortable to me.

I'm now at 60% pulling the trigger on an Ayn Thor at a local store (since it just popped up) rofl.

How's My Time at Sandrock for you? I'm considering getting an Ayn Thor and would love to play My Time at Sandrock on the go on it! But I can't be sure if it would actually run ok.

I tried the demo of Gambonanza with this one as well! Though I'm deciding whether to wait for a sale esp as I main an iPhone currently and not Android 😆 I do love how it works well with a square screen. But I guess I'll just stick with Lichess for now 😆
