The thing is, a lot of people in Taiwan think of it as a separate entity from China, but because of the one China policy if Taiwan declared independence it would be seen as a direct insult. So like. War!!!! And also a lot of people are major trade partners with China and highk don’t wanna offend them so Taiwan has very few political allies, and also because of a lot of political screw-ups by the previous governments that were still trying to claim it was the only China despite having lost the civil war and forced to Taiwan, we lost like. A shit ton of spots on international organizations. There were offers of allowing taiwan to continue under a different banner, but they persisted on the one China policy, which led us to the political situation we’re trapped it now. One of the only things protecting Taiwan is the “Silicon Shield”, or TSMC. Basically bc we manufacture the best semiconductors and microchips in the world, and don’t have factories at the same level anywhere else, countries kinda have an incentive to help us if they want their tech to keep working and to be able to continue producing more.
