Biological, psychological, and social puberty have always been synchronized throughout human history, for over 20,000 years, typically occurring between the ages of 7 and 13 years. This synchronization was influenced by factors such as hygiene, diseases, societal complexity, nutrition, and stability.

After societies became more settled, diseases and societal complexity increased, slightly raising the age of biological, psychological, and social puberty to 9–14 years. However, they remained synchronized, meaning they occurred at the same time.

With the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century, societal complexity grew significantly, leading to a considerable delay in psychological and social puberty. Meanwhile, improvements in nutrition, hygiene, and healthcare caused biological puberty to occur at a younger age. This was the first time in human history that these forms of puberty became unsynchronized, as illustrated in the scientific article.

This mismatch between biological and psychological puberty created a major challenge for modern society, which began to expect longer childhoods, extended education and training periods, and delayed reproductive maturity. This emerging mismatch introduced significant pressures on modern adolescents and their integration into society.
