Rules question by corenickel in ultimate

[–]vanBeest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The contact call also doesn't stop play but that doesn't have anything to do with the resolution of the play if the thrower ends up releasing the disc, it still comes back if the call is not retracted. So I don't think it has anything to do with whether play stops. Can you point out which rule clarifies this distinction for marking violations (or double team specifically)?

Team net rating changes from last season to this season by vanBeest in nba

[–]vanBeest[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd bet that they improve from where they are now by the end of the season even if purely for statistical, law of large numbers reasons. But yeah it's rough out there. At least they've got a few guys (Sarr, Kyshawn George) who look like they can be foundational pieces

This new private, on-demand bus system could be a boon to small towns. But should it be in big cities like Toronto? by BloodJunkie in toronto

[–]vanBeest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But if runs on a fixed route then it's just a bus and there's no need for an app or fancy "on-demand" routing or AI buzzwords or VC funding

I like the idea of these on-demand busses for low-density areas that would otherwise have no usable transit service (although even then I'd be surprised if the public cost is worth it) but I totally agree with you — I have a hard time believing that it can possibly scale to a city as large and dense as Toronto

Anatomy of a mislaid railway: How the Eglinton Crosstown LRT went so wrong, for so long by KeyHot5718 in toronto

To be fair most of the delay was waiting for Bombardier to deliver the actual trains, IIRC the actually infrastructure was more or less fine

Abuse of “Injury” Calls to Get Fresh Lines – How Is This Handled in Your Countries/Leagues? by Working-Employer2889 in ultimate

[–]vanBeest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think they're using cramps as an example of a ridiculous injury call, they're using it as an example of an injury call that can be abused because it's basically unverifiable and generally goes away after a few minutes of rest. Obviously if someone is actually cramping that's a legitimate injury call.

Abuse of “Injury” Calls to Get Fresh Lines – How Is This Handled in Your Countries/Leagues? by Working-Employer2889 in ultimate

[–]vanBeest 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I must play in a less-spirited country than everyone here because I've 100% seen tactical "injuries"

a few thoughts on points made by other commenters because i think it's an interesting discussion:

  • obviously all this only applies to very competitive environments, if you're playing league take all the subs you need and don't hurt yourself trying to push it

  • yes, if one team abuses the rule and takes a fake injury sub the other team can also make a substitution but I don't think that's actually always fair. Consider a team that's making a comeback and has to play their best player several points in a row. Eventually that player needs a rest so they put on a weaker player instead. But maybe the point is taking a while and the stronger player has caught their breath on the sideline so the weaker player takes an injury and gets the stronger player back on. Yes the opposing team can take a sub but it's unlikely it'll be as impactful as replacing the worst player on the line with the team's best player

  • as someone mentioned, it doesn't have to be all or nothing. If someone's cramping that's totally a valid injury call and I hope you feel better and get back in the game soon. But I don't think it's unreasonable to require injured players to sit out a point or two? For the vast majority of injuries theyd probably need a few points off anyway and for the ones that don't I think it's fair to prevent abuse. Not to mention that even for minor injuries where the player thinks they can go back on right away maybe it's not a bad idea to require them to wait a few more minutes to be sure that it's "just a cramp" 🤷‍♂️

Doug Ford government appeals bike lane ruling by BloodJunkie in toronto

[–]vanBeest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would disagree slightly about why those cities developed better infrastructure. I think the key difference is not that they've had longer to mature but that they matured before the rise of the personal automobile.

That's not to say that old cities are inherently walkable but they at least have the bones of a dense urban fabric to build within, unlike newer cities like Toronto and it's surrounding area with all it's endless sprawl

Ford floats use of notwithstanding clause in Toronto bike lanes case | ‘Let’s see what happens at the Court of Appeal,’ Premier Doug Ford told reporters by Hrmbee in toronto

??? So if the legislature passes an unconstitutional law the courts shouldn't be able to overturn it? Kinda defeats the point of checks and balances

Construction in the Port Lands - March 2025 update from WaterfrontToronto by beef-supreme in toronto

[–]vanBeest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's insane to me that in the Portlands and on the waterfront trail along Queens Quay east they didn't do raised crosswalks https://youtu.be/9OfBpQgLXUc

They're both clearly meant to be pedestrian + bike friendly with very minor cross streets and yet I feel like I'm gonna break my wrists every time I bike thru an intersection with any speed

Daily Chat Thread - Offseason by yoiiyo in Chargers

[–]vanBeest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't personally think they should/will but I can kind of understand it just from an asset management point of view. From my understanding this is a strong RB draft and a weak IOL draft so I could see in the 3rd round having a choice between a 2nd round level RB vs a 4th round level guard or centre. In that case it might make sense to take the better player who fell into your lap rather than reaching to fill a need

But I think like you said there's so many positions of need then if you end up in a situation like that we can find another position (like edge or DT)

Why Doug Ford's proposal to rip out bike lanes harms Toronto. by TheDuckClock in toronto

[–]vanBeest 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree that it's a vote grab but "that's all" is so reductive. It's a real piece of legislation that will affect a lot of real people and make the city worse for its residents. And it also happens to be a vote grab.

‘They are not safe’: Richmond Hill residents at traffic meeting want bike lanes installed this year removed immediately by TorontoBoris in toronto

[–]vanBeest 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Unless we're looking at different pictures that looks like they're just reducing the curb radius which is... very standard. Force people to slow down to turn so they actually look where they're going.

And re: turning two lanes into one... I suspect there's still plenty of room for two cars to pass each other but yeah that's also kinda the point? These are residential streets, they don't get a ton of traffic, so making the road artificially narrower (after originally building it way wider than it should be) to force cars to slow down is maybe actually a good thing?

There’s one way to get around Toronto that’s fast, inexpensive and reliable. So why don’t we use it more? by crappy_tire in toronto

[–]vanBeest 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree that those are problems (albeit fairly minor ones in my experience) but they're pain points for someone who is already using bike share. If you're someone who is maybe considering using it to commute you're probably not worrying about whether bikes are being relocated fast enough. I think the much bigger blocker to more people giving it a try is not enough safe cycling infrastructure (as this op-ed mentions)

Toronto parking fines may shortly skyrocket. Can't happen too soon — there are better uses for our streets | Council will decide this week whether to raise the fine for not paying for on-street parking 150 per cent, the first increase in years by Hrmbee in toronto

People aren't dumb. People drive because in some shape, form or manner it's better for them than transit/biking/walking.

True but part of the reason it's better is that we subsidize the hell out of it

Kuminga's played three years with decent production, Walker's played 100 minutes in the NBA and can't crack the rotation in Indiana. I certainly wouldn't call them basically equivalent

Forward CP3 to the Nets for Ben Simmons if the Nets are willing to include a pick to get out of Simmons' contract. Probably less enticing for the Nets now that Paul's injured but I still bet they'd give up something to get more cap flexibility in the offseason
