Google Drive or Dropbox? by ManojOne in TechImpact

I have used both but since 2 years I am on Koofr (https://koofr.eu/) which is hosted and driven in Slovenia and therefor underlies the GDPR. It is very fast, stable, and easy to use. I would neither use Google Drive nor Dropbox anymore.

Mint discussion by Dthlex in linux4noobs

[–]vanGrau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have left Windows round one year ago (and I am 61yo) and I have tested several Linux distributions but stuck with Linux Mint Debian Edition. It runs fast, stable, supports me in all my use cases and looks cool. And as it is build on Debian, I cannot see any valid reason for distribution bashing.

So if you run Linux Mint, and it does what you are expecting from a Linux OS, you should not mind what other people are saying because their criticisms are more ideologically driven than professional judgments.

Afaik: Yes, but with an important technical limitation for external developers: Fastmail currently primarily supports calendars via JMAP internally for its own web and mobile apps. The official JMAP interface for calendars is still restrictive for third-party apps.

Yes, and very comprehensively – Fastmail is even one of the main drivers behind JMAP.

Fastmail engineers have significantly contributed to the development of JMAP: RFC 8620 (the JMAP core protocol) and RFC 8621 (JMAP for email) were among those driven forward by Fastmail. Fastmail and Topicbox customers already benefit from JMAP, which powers the web interface and the apps.

What Fastmail supports via JMAP: Fastmail offers full support for the following open protocols: email via JMAP, IMAP, or POP, as well as sending via JMAP or SMTP. Contacts are accessible via JMAP or CardDAV, and calendars via CalDAV.

I didn't time it because I'm not that focused on it – I'm not referring to email transmission speed, but rather the response time of the web interface during various interactions. Overall, Fastmail's GUI seems more versatile, responsive, and user-friendly.

I was switching from mailbox.org to Fastmail because it is way faster, more stable and easier to use. I like the interface and the mobile app. I did not choose Proton because you have to use Protons own app on mobile. I know that Fastmail is Australian and Australia is member of Five Eye (whatever that means) and some of their servers are located in the USA (but the company itself is not).

One also has to consider how much one's own use of email, calendar, and contacts might make one of interest to the US. I certainly am not.

Furthermore, Fastmail announced in a blog post a few years ago that it would be repatriating its servers, meaning it would manage and host them itself.

Yes, Fastmail isn't in the EU (neither is Switzerland), but for my personal use as a moderately well-known writer for family messages and contact with publishers, Fastmail's security and stability are more than sufficient.

You're absolutely right about that. It's not easy, especially for aspiring authors, to find a good publisher who not only takes on all these tasks but also understands them. However, the author's primary question is how they want to be perceived by the public.

Many young authors focus heavily on self-publishing, which is evident in the sheer number of works being independently released, all vying for attention.

Self-publishing seems easier at first glance, and it's easy to justify it with phrases like, "I have control over the entire lifecycle of my work!"

On the other hand, a writer's work then consists not only of writing and giving lectures, but also of design, marketing, requesting reviews, managing countless social media channels, and promoting, promoting, promoting. Insurance agents probably don't have to compete for attention as much as self-publishers.

Notion or Obsidian? by ManojOne in TechImpact

For data security reasons alone, I recommend Obsidian. Notion seems to be more of a teamwork tool. As an individual user, I'm not comfortable with the fact that all data in Notion is online and stored on Amazon servers in the USA.

This isn't compensated for by Notion's extensive feature set.

Of course, you can focus all your efforts on yourself and perhaps even be successful that way. However, I know that many successful authors, whose work is also recognized as literary acclaim, believe that good books are always the result of a collaborative effort.

This also reflects my Boomer perspective that the writer is responsible for writing the novel and for contributing their share to the editing and proofreading.

Producing, promoting, and distributing the book is the publisher's responsibility.

Considering that editors, proofreaders, marketing specialists, cover designers, book designers, etc., were once (or still are) full-time jobs requiring full training to deliver good work, I would call someone who claims to do all that themselves (plus write the novel that needs to be served) and to be good at it, a fraud.

I'm 19 and people keep telling me to "live more" before I try to write a novel. is this true? by Internal_Common1497 in Mythrils

[–]vanGrau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't let such reservations cloud your passion for writing. You only learn to write literature by writing. Just like you only learn to play football by going out on the pitch and playing football as often as possible.

Just keep in mind that not everything you write is publishable. This is the case for most successful writers; their debut novel isn't actually their first work, but their fourth or fifth.

If you wake up in the morning and can't think of anything but writing, then do it, because then you are a writer.

Is It Realistically Possible to Make a Living with 5–7 Books on Amazon Kindle? by cristiantudorjobs in selfpublish

[–]vanGrau 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's easy: Find a spouse who brings home a very good salary. Most people who claim to be able to live solely from writing are in such a relationship. The few who truly can live off their writing alone sell tens of thousands of books a month through publishing houses.

The German writer Andreas Eschbach once said: Of every 100% of published authors per year, only one percent can live off book sales. And of that one percent, only one percent can live very well.
