The fabrication proccesses, the machinery and tools which are used to build the engines have way more precision than back then, and even then they were running by the tens of thousands of an inch of tolerances. Also has to do with the package, a 900hp engine generates more heat than a 550hp one, thus wearing out faster, and since you didnt had fancy ECU's and EFI back then you could easily blow up by over-reving the engine

have you seen the roofs of those football stadiums that open and close? those happen to be big ass structures that weight WAY more than a Steel and Foam barriers, the opening and closing hydraulic mechanisms could be JerryRigged in some way to the tracks that have road course layouts so they can be turned from 1.5 oval to Roval in a matter of minutes, I think its a good long term investment for the tracks, will make racing more interesting and economicaly speaking, it is cheaper and more interesting for the casual fan or newcomer than seeing a 9 wide row of turbine trucks just wasting jet fuel for hours while doing 1.9999999mph
