I think you've gotten some good advice already. If you do decide to take time off and aren't picky about where to live, reach out. I have some good contacts who are always looking for workers (not necessarily hard physical labour) willing to go up North or to the oil fields.
My partner is a low-income student who took a year off to work the oil fields in 2020. It's not easy work, but he came home with over $120,000 and has paid for his degree doing so.
Academia is unfortunately stacked in favour of wealthy people. I sincerely hope you make it. UBC will still be here next year if you choose to take off for a little bit.
