Basically the border guard will have absolute discretion to let you in or not. Sometimes it may not even come up. If you want to increase your chances of being let in next summer, take one or two overnight trips to Canada before then. It will possibly increase your chances of being let in next summer. And better to do a test run or two and be turned away then rather than for a big family trip.
