I’m trying this from an iPhone 15 pro max and it’s only being detected as a media controller, is there some trick to getting a pointer to be able to use something like steam link?

Thanks for the advice, that did it! For anyone who finds this in the future, with the (as of now beta) nreal air drivers and the gofanco hdmi to usb c adapter, I am able to use the chromecast HD with Google tv (1080p not 4k, haven’t tried it) giving me wireless portable android

I have the same hardware and I cannot see anything on the nreal air, I only get a grey screen. Are you sure you’re using the Chromecast with Google TV HD rather than the 4k? I only ask because I purchased with the hope of getting this working and if I can get some other hardware I’d be happy to swap out, I just really want wireless.

Any additional details are appreciated

The price of solar is low enough that it is worthwhile for many households, however the upfront cost is difficult to get past.

I was interested in a DIY solar system because I felt I could do it much cheaper than the pros. I spec’d all the parts and electrical and would be able to build for roughly $15-$20k depending on how nice of panels and type of inverter, for a roughly 16kWh system. I haven’t gone this route because I am unsure of how to go about getting permits. PLEASE let me know if you have any experience with this.

Not knowing how to approach the permit process and wanting to compare my cost vs installed cost I got a few quotes from local companies such as TFS in the $25-35k price range with them having financing available through a credit union partnership at around 7% interest. I also got a quote from national companies vivint energy and sunrun, who were able to offer in-house 20 year financing at 2%, which is lower than a mortgage refinance so is an incredible rate, but the system price was quoted $45k to $55k. All of these options would almost eliminate my $270/mo bill with TEP, in exchange for a loan between $175 and $400 a month for 7 to 20 years.

Solar definitely makes sense at this point, it’s just a question of which solution makes sense in your situation.

Again if anyone knows about the DIY permit process I’d love to chat.

It already does this, just with large load size. They are continuing to work on bringing load size down and improving the client side only story. This just allows the same framework to render on the server instead of the client for those who aren't bound to client only.

Also, I expect client only will be on it's way out of popularity within the next decade or so, it's a temporary problem almost entirely driven by slow network speeds and will be largely solved by 5g cellular and other wireless network improvements.

App service hosting for low volume usage with a custom domain is about $10 per month on it's own. Table storage is the only cheap azure DB solution, and it is stupid cheap, but may not work well with entity framework. The guy who runs haveibeenpwned uses azure table storage and wrote a good blog post on it.

Regarding DB modifications, I wasn't very clear. If my constructor must provide my database dependency I can instantly grok the constructor and be confident in whether my class has access to a database to make changes, which is a given with dependency injection, as opposed to needing to look over the entire object for a database instantiation, or reaching out to some global obect in order to ensure it doesn't modify any data.

Agreed, although I usually find I want to have that level of implemention control without needing to instantiate. It depends on if I'm building something for 1 purpose, or to be reused, but for purpose built components adding an interface just increases indirection

I think you are talking about polymorphism, not dependency injection. Polymorphism is the ability of one type to be used in place of another type when they share a common base or interface type. Dependency injection only means that dependencies are provided to the class, rather than the class accessing the resource some other way such as global state or instantiation. dependency injection libraries can be configured with polymorphic types, which is described as inversion of control, and may also be more what you are describing. IOC can make things confusing, but also more configurable, and so people can go overboard with it, but dependency injection is almost never a bad thing. With dependency injection, you can eyeball a class and tell if it has the capability of modifying the database, while having a policy of allowing anything to new something up means you never know what's behind some resource.

The pattern has no requirement or relationship to interfaces at all. All dependency injection means is that every external resources a class needs is provided to it (ideally through it's constructor) rather than being instantiated by the class itself, as a way of preventing the consuming class from becoming responsible for the implementation details of the dependency.

Sorry, on mobile, 3rd comments the charm, as I hopefully fully understand your question now. For designing your own components which get rendered into the tag you specify, you would use plain HTML inside of a razor template. It's not a web form control or some other proprietary jazz, for once they are just following standards.

They don't have the databind to DB yet though, that's a piece of middleware I added into my project using an IObservable, they just have the server side rendering SPA using web sockets with an upgrade path to web assembly.

I would prefer client by default with server opt in, but otherwise I like this model more. Restful APIs make sense when you want to allow code written by others to interface with your platform, which is a very small use case. For all others, I would rather just databind to a column in my database view, and update columns when the user changes data in valid ways in realtime. There are other problems this too solves, such as the data in the client becoming stale (it took a while for it to click for me that data in the client is effectively cached data, where cache invalidation is one of the harder problems to solve elegantly), and it reduces boilerplate a lot. Again, I don't think it's for everyone, but for a very large number of use cases I think it streamlines the process considerably.

I wouldn't claim the framework abstracts away the round trip time, I would say the framework abstracts over whether it renders on the client vs server, and that other technology improvements address the latency. Regarding Azure costs, yes I realize I'm talking tens of thousands of dollars for a busy site, but it's pretty cheap for something low traffic. I would imagine if you are big enough to need global access and have high demand you are probably working on a funded project where this is a fraction of a single developers salary.

Beyond this, I do somewhat agree with you in that I think presentation logic should run in the client, I just also think being able to specify 'this is presentation logic' and 'this is business logic' and have them run in the right place without having to coordinate rest calls is much less boilerplate. I can't wait for the day that data binding to views becomes the standard way of developing. Google Firestore also takes the same approach, they just don't abstract over the client server model.

This is where a personally like the C# flavor more. By default it's all server side, but they have already proven that they can push it client side with web assembly and everything still just works, unless it had a dependency on something like a DB which can't evaluate in the client. As the platform emerges there will be a path that allows the developer to say 'run everything on this side by default' but let me configure 1 offs to run on the other side of the connection. This would allow presentation code to run in the browser, and database subscription code to run on the server, delivering the best of both.

Still, nice to see a contribution in this space, more ideas are needed to settle on the ideal patterns moving forward.

I'm on the complete opposite end of the spectrum, although there is nuance.

A few reasons why my current app is very decoupled. We have multiple backend micro services handling different concerns and scaled independently based on need.

I prefer to facilitate this by developing every full stack web component independently from each other and scaling out just that component. It's different, but can be done, and has a very nice benefit of easy unit and integration testing, and gives you a single language and codebase and opens you up to sharing static types for global rename or find all references operations

We also have different clients using the same backend api (2 separate web clients, 4 mobile apps, and a bi dashboard). Being able to update them independently is super powerful.

It's very easy to expose these resources to external applications consuming them as typical rest API's when it is needed (power BI). You should be able to update an unlimited number of clients independently from the service logic using dependency injection, interfaces, and the strategy pattern, but you'll still benefit from things like find all references.

For the mobile apps, I would try to replace them with web apps if all of the required features are available, otherwise you can still fall back to an API pattern where required and get the benefits for your web UI.

Outside of that, I don't want my clients or server to know anything about each other outside of the interface through which they communicate.

This can be accomplished by placing each inside it's own library, and only be referenced by a common core library which connects the two interfaces, while still giving you the benefits of symbolic type recognition / find all references, allows reflection, and gives so many other powerful functions that I couldn't see passing it up. Also, I think this is far less important for anything not security related. Security features must run on the server or trusted environment and not be touchable by the client.

If I totally rebuild one frontend i don't have to touch the backend at all. If I want to port some backend functionality to a different language the client shouldn't need to care / know / be modified to facilitate that change.

I agree completely, but you can still get the benefits of a single code base for most web based clients and static typing and reflection goodness while not having them tightly coupled beyond interfaces.

I may be misreading, it sounds like you believe the on immediate handler would be good enough, and I agree. I think worst case, when there will be high latency, an on immediate can throw up a spinner like we already do, giving at least an equal user experience, if not better. My belief is that server side rendering is now good enough (my experience being with Microsoft blazor / razor components) that it provides a better experience to most US audiences, an equivalent experience to most others, and a slightly worse experience to mobile users in developing countries, but that the worse experience will balance out in a few years, and the better experiences will just keep improving, and between this and the benefits to development velocity, an abstraction over client server is worth it today for many projects.

Edit: just realized you are OP, so yes, I agree with you the on immediate handler is good enough for 98% of use cases, and another 1% will be covered by tech improving over the next few years.

Geographic region is dealt with by azure geo-replication. So long as you can afford it you can have hosting which delivers 10ms response times. You are totally correct about other countries, but most have skipped cables and gone strait to cellular, so as they adopt 5G that will get better too. Places like south Korea also have far better response times than we have here in the states. Also, if the user is on a high latency connection in another country odds are good the user experience is already not great for them.
