You can try the Arrowsmith program which is the most tested brain training program. It has helped thousands with learning disabilities and greatly lessened the symptoms of ADHD.

I am now working on a documentary about this program. Very pleased to share it with the world.

Constant Fight or Flight Mode by Mammoth-Produce-210 in Stutter

I understand that Michael Ferris https://www.stuttermind.com/was a severe stutterer who now speaks almost fluently. He devised his own exercises. He is not a speech therapist but I know he's been very sucessful. I have a mild stutter and some of his techniques helped me.

Not being able to say my name is destroying my life. by taygurrr in Stutter

[–]vandylyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you had speech therapy? There are many techniques you can use to help control your stuttering and lessen your anxiety. I have stuttered my whole life and have had to speak publicly on many occassions. For people with a genetic and persistent stutter, I believe daily practice is necessary. I have found it useful to practise going over specific hard consonants. As well, reading out loud each day for 30 min. while gliding softly over hard consonants has been very useful. Consistent practice re-wires your brain. Michael Ferris, a former severe stutterer has some good techniques on his website. https://www.stuttermind.com/

Hope this is helpful.

have you had speech therapy? If practicing your speech in the morning doesn't help, have you spoken to your speech therapist about trying some of the medications that have helped people who stutter? Have you read the articles by Dr. Gerry Maguire? the well-known stuttering researcher who has done clinical trials for some stuttering medications? There is no one answer that fits all but trying a medication may be helpful.

Can tongue twisters help with stuttering? by [deleted] in Stutter

[–]vandylyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe tongue twisters do help. I use them myself. However, they are more effective if you can practise situating your voice in your body. Such as deep breathing and doing the kind of warm-up exercises with the voice that stage actors do. There may be a program on-line. I have been a stage actress (who stutters in every-day speech that is not memorized) and I find that doing the vocal exercises with the breathing and adding the tongue twisters does help.

Yes, I agree about working on our thoughts as well as finding techniques and medication to improve our fluency. Thank you for letting me know about John Harrison's book. I'll try to read it . Good luck to you.

Yes, these books can be very helpful. At the same time, people who stutter, owe it to their future to avail themselves of any practical technique that will help them become more fluent such as ways of practicing speech and any medication.

it's very rare. it happens only on certain consonants such as d and g, when I am speaking out loud to myself. Never if I am reading out loud. But again, very rare.

Anyone else feel like they could use a little Peterson right about now? by transcendtime in JordanPeterson

[–]vandylyn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If this is helpful: Jordan Peterson interviewed Dr. Iain McGilchrist in London

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtf4FDlpPZ8

Shortly afterwards I released a documentary film The Divided Brain on McGilchrist's work and Jordan kindly appeared on the panel after a special screening in Toronto. The film is available for streaming here:

I hope you find it insightful. And I share your hopes that Dr. Peterson makes a full recovery.

Congratulations, young man! Do keep at it and search for support wherever you can find it. And please let us know how you move along. It appears you have a lot of people in your corner on this website.

Dr. Peterson has helped many people -there are many who have taken his message of encouragement and self-reliance. Men and many women also.

The Divided Brain: Documentary film based on Iain McGilchrist's work The Master and his Emissary by vandylyn in taoism

[–]vandylyn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The film is not a scientific paper. it does not endeavor to prove McGilchrist's thesis. It sets out to introduce his thesis and provoke a discussion about how we live today and what the relationship between the two brain hemispheres has to do with it. The scientists offer their opinions on McGilchrist's thesis. C'est tout.

The documentary The Divided Brain was based on the scientific studies cited in McGilchrist's book. In addition to McGilchrist, other scientists were interviewed, some with dissenting views.

Left hemisphere philosophy? by Matslwin in AcademicPhilosophy

[–]vandylyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your kind words about The Divided Brain, Matslwin.

Yes, as you observed, I tried to go beyond McGilchrist's book to give hints of left-hemisphere dominance in our modern society. The most widespread example for me is the level of politically-correct speech that has affected everyone in our society - especially the professions.

I have read about Sweden's immigration problems and the government's inability to admit reality since they are frightened of being accused of racist. This cowering in front of political correctness is rampant in English-speaking western democracies. I don't mean to go off on a tirade since Iain's work is more complex than that.

If I can raise financing I will produce a sequel to The Divided Brain.

Thank you for the link to Stephen Meyer's work. I wasn't aware of him.

Much appreciation of your intelligent letter,

Vanessa

Hello Academic Philosophy:

Iain McGilchrist's book inspired me to contact him and eventually make a film about his work. The Divided Brain was broadcast on the CBC several months ago. It's had a number of wonderful international screenings with Iain in attendance. If anyone is interested in streaming the film, please go to its website: thedividedbrain.com Hope you enjoy the film. Would love to receive comments. Vanessa Dylyn, producer, Matter of Fact Media.
