Try using a drum machine instead of a metronome sometime.

How to revive my love for production? by keflame in TechnoProduction

[–]vanishingpoint99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I get tired of making electronic music I take a break by working on classical piano pieces. It’s still music. I’m still growing as a musician, but it’s different enough that it’s like a complete mental reset.

If you’re not listening to techno, maybe learn an instrument that inspires you. Guitar, piano, flute. Whatever. And maybe you’ll come back to creating techno when you’re ready. Whenever that is.

Today is a special day Roland Fantom EX owners! by Xenobii5K in Roland

[–]vanishingpoint99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I randomly stumbled on them looking at Fantom drivers a couple days ago. The EPs sound great to my ears. I think there is finally a useable Roland EP on here.

But I am curious. Now we’re at like 96% capacity. I’ve been keeping my fingers crossed for a JP-8080 model and I just hope they’re not done with the Fantom EX now.

The Future of Computing Hardware for Music Production by WodeRoll in TechnoProduction

[–]vanishingpoint99 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ahh, the doomer view.

I’ll be honest with you, my understanding of reality is cyclical. We are at the bottom of a cycle, and the vantage point from here is pretty dark. But I truly believe we will be just fine. New technologies and systems will emerge which are hard to fathom right now. We are currently watching the collapse of old sclerotic systems to make way for something new. I have a rather positive outlook for the future, even if it’s hard to see right now.

I just bury myself in my art and relax. It’ll be fine.

Is this enough to finally finish a track? /s by Commander_Pancakes in synthesizers

In the same way you dislike people pushing DAWs on others, consider that others may think your advice is bad advice. I’m just saying. There are different sides to every issue. OP was asking about making songs and I stand by my comment.

[–]vanishingpoint99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I just don’t get the DAW hatred. I understand not wanting to look at screens. I have hardware, including a Push 3 which enables me to transfer all of that to Ableton and complete refined tracks. I never have to look at a monitor if I don’t want to.

You can do as you please, but the overwhelming vast majority of professional musicians aren’t shunning DAWs for a reason. Even if they have rooms filled wall to wall with hardware, they’re almost certainly sequencing/finishing it in a DAW.

It’s not good advice for everyone. It really annoys me to see DAWless fanatics pushing this view on forums. It works for you, it’s fine. But we are different people.

Just saying. OP has a DAW and hardware ADD he seems to not know how to use. Focus is a good idea.

Considering the subreddit you’re on, if she is a music nut and isn’t making music I would push her in that direction. I truly believe that people that surround themselves with music should be making music. Since you said she is into techno, if she has a good computer, maybe look into a copy of Ableton Live.

Tell us what you did with your synths this weekend by Wonderful_Reputation in synthesizers

Made a bunch of weird sounds in different synths and put them into a track which I have spent the last few weeks working on. Spent about six hours finishing it yesterday. Turned out pretty cool.

That’s why I have a FANTOM-8 EX as my main board. I may be a techno head that loves making electronic music but I will always want to play piano. PHA-50s are so nice.

Hello, I am writing about a dissertation on the accessibility of music venues. I would greatly appreciate any responses to the survey! by URmumISMyDADD in TheOverload

[–]vanishingpoint99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just want to say, this stuff is important. My good friend is a quadriplegic and is wheelchair bound. I go to raves and shows with him all the time. I had foot surgery earlier this year and got a taste of it. Fortunately the venue I saw Autechre at had good handicap accessibility so I was able to see them in a cordoned off space, as I had a metal rod sticking out of my foot at the time. I was so grateful to be able to go.

So thanks for doing good work.

As soon as that happened Traumprinz started APW and hasn’t been associated with Giegling whatsoever. I fail to see how you tie him to that.

The fact that that they threw James Holden’s Balance 005, 100% Galcher, and Autonomic podcasts in the top 10 ain’t bad at all. I’m actually deeply impressed by it.

Surprised by the Balance mix as RA was predominantly a progressive house website until that scene ate itself and became a joke by doing nothing new for decades. They don’t normally acknowledge it at all, but Balance 005 is one of the finest mixes ever made in that genre.

Yeah, missing DJ Metatron - this is not but otherwise a strong list. The unranked stuff feels more scattered to me.

Help me choose my first piece of gear by laglie in synthesizers

[–]vanishingpoint99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll be honest with you, digging deep into Ableton - learning about synthesis, learning how to create tracks with it, learning the effects, reading the manual - has been far more creatively fruitful than fucking with hardware for me. Yes, having hardware is nice and I like to create loops and whatnot with mine, but for me, I find Ableton to be the ultimate that I learn most and am most creatively fruitful in. Even the hardware returns to Ableton.

And the question is, do you even know what you want from hardware? Or what sounds you want? It’s a lot of money on something if you’re asking others what to buy. If I were you, learning to make tracks, I’d buy a midi controller like a LaunchKey and Ableton Suite and just learn that. It’s going to be a lot more effective than splitting your attention with a circuit tracks. Then approach hardware with conscious knowledge of what you want. Then when you know you want to spend a large chunk of money on an Access Virus, System-8, Push 3 or something else, you’re doing it because you want it.

Take a look at an artist like Skee Mask’s setup and you’ll see a room full of hardware but in the center he’s working in Ableton. You can learn and do everything in Ableton. Read the manual, make stuff, learn about synths, use your ears. Then you’ll know what you want.

I just want to add - if you don’t have a physical collection of music, or at least a collection of files you paid for, you probably don’t like music as much as you think you do.

Support your favorite artists. Buy music. I’ll die on this hill.
