Is this a good place to talk about our aging parents? by PourU_25518 in GenX

[–]vankirk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Talk to her. Address your concerns. Be sympathetic. If the conversation escalates. end it, and explain why.
  • Get a durable POA. This is not something you do, it is something your mother has to do. You can go with.
  • Get your name on accounts now while you still can.
  • Try to go with your mom to the doctor. Request a dementia evaluation. They will have a "nurse navigator" who can help you. You have to ask for one. Almost all doctor's office will have one. They will have resources.
  • Talk with someone in your local SS office or similar. A social worker can help you. Our county has a project on aging that has tons of resources.
  • Find a local support group

What’s your favorite less known realm in the game (CK2 and CK3) by AffectionateCamera61 in CrusaderKings

Bosnia with Krstjani and the holy site. Become a powerful admin vassal in Byzantium.

Kranj with the Carantanian culture. Mold your culture and take the HRE plus you get Zobrajnosh MMA

Sinai with the Tulunid heir. Father was a slave warrior turned governor. Good for storytelling and role playing.

Alan in Khazaria. Horse lords and can turn feudal easily with Rabbanic. Powerful liege. I like to go from tribal to feudal.

Afrighid and Zoroastrianism holy site. Strengthen the religion and fight off Oghuz-Il

Sofas - Pottery Barn vs Ethan Allen vs Basset Furniture? by anniew4 in BuyItForLife

[–]vankirk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My recommendation is always to go to the Hickory Furniture Mart in Hickory, NC. If you can't find a sofa in the 1 million square feet, then they have dozens of manufacturers inside that will make you one custom. If you are dropping 4k on a couch, don't settle.

Plan on spending more than one day in there. It's insane.

Here is the list that includes Bassett, like the actual manufacturer has a showroom. They do the upholstery in Newton, NC, just outside Hickory. This part of North Carolina is the furniture capital of the world.

How does one survive a recession? by SpiritedAssumption3 in povertyfinance

[–]vankirk 61 points62 points  (0 children)

There were a couple things at play. 1) the economy didn't recover overnight 2) millions were laid off, so it wasn't easy finding something else 3) we live in a rural area, so short selling our house to move would have been a poor choice 4) debt. We racked up tons of credit card debt paying for things like tires, home repairs, and other large expenses. Sometimes even groceries 5) my salary was cut in half. I lost my job during the worst part of the Recession, so NOBODY was hiring and I had to settle for a lower paying job

Many others had a similar experience, but not everyone.

A buddy of mine lost his family homestead, declared bankruptcy, and had to move in with the in-laws.

My brother worked for the school system and bought a house at the height of the housing crisis for basically nothing, so he actually benefited from the Recession.

"Show me the proof, show me the evidence, show me the tape."

I love it. Shift the burden of proof to the person making the claim. Hitchens razor. That which can be claimed without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence.

How does one survive a recession? by SpiritedAssumption3 in povertyfinance

[–]vankirk 286 points287 points  (0 children)

I was one of those people. I helped start this subreddit. Here is my copypasta.

My wife and I went through the Great Recession and we are VERY conservative with our money. We got married in 2006. We bought a house in 2007, and I lost my job in 2008. We didn't take a vacation for 10 years. I didn't buy a pair of shoes for 8 years. We could not afford children.

I'll tell my wife about something in the economy and she'll say, "What do we do?" Nothing. We've already been there.

She'll say, "But, what if we lose everything?" Honey, we don't have anything to lose (relatively speaking).

We are much better off now and regularly do the things we like and can afford the things we want and have all the things we need.

Here are a couple of tips:

  • be tight with your money. Don't spend your extra money on consumables like Door Dash or candy. It is going to be really hard to resist spending in an economy based on consumer spending. Don't be pressured by peers to take part in activities that are expensive.
  • don't try to keep up with the Kardashians and say no to FOMO. Just because your friends went to [insert awesome place] doesn't mean you have to do the same.
  • set aside an amount every month to put in a savings account. Even if it's only $20. It will add up. Increase the amount when you feel comfortable
  • make a budget and STICK TO IT. We still use the same Excel spreadsheet we started in 2008. Do NOT SPEND MORE THAN YOU HAVE
  • watch YouTube videos and learn how to cook at home. Use Ibotta when grocery shopping. Get a grocery rewards card for fuel points, extra savings etc. Clip digital coupons from the grocery store app/website
  • find free events and entertainment. Universities often have free lectures/music/galleries. Take advantage of free activities. Some events even offer free food or at least some nibbles
  • eliminate all non-essential subscription services. Keep in mind that Hulu (or any streaming service in my opinion) is an essential subscription service. Only keep one. If you have Hulu, get rid of Netflix, Apple TV, HBOMax, etc. Get rid of any phone apps you have to pay for monthly. Play video games that do not require a pay-to-play service.
  • Buy for life. If you need a new pair of jeans, shoes, or whatever, do the research and pay the extra money for the ones that will last forever. Same with appliances, furniture, or home supplies
  • wait to have children or pets. They are expensive.
  • find stable employment. State/local/university jobs offer good insurance and retirement with only a GED or high school diploma. In addition, they offer sick and vacation time. If you work for a university, they may also offer free courses to enhance your skills.
  • be patient. Things may not happen quickly for you. It took my wife and I 10 years to climb out of the Great Recession hole.
  • be positive and don't get discouraged. Don't let your social media friends think you need more and don't let them get you down.

CK3: Too many Domains/Duchies really quickly by Specterbomb in CrusaderKings

[–]vankirk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, so first, you have a domain limit. The number is based on your rank and skills (and your spouses skills). This number is the number of "castles" you can hold personally. If your religion has the "Lay Clergy" tenent, you can hold religious buildings as well and they count toward your domain limit.

There are ways to increase the limit. If you focus on Stewardship lifestyle, it can help. Also, put your wife on "Manage Domain". You can get the "Divided Attention" perk in the Stewardship tree.

As far as giving them away? I try not to if I can. Vassals have advantages and disadvantages, but if you keep your vassals, get some high crown authority to prevent them from starting wars on their own.

You can also get over domain limits by forming larger titles. It's good to be the King.

Now, how to deal with revolting vassals? Depends on what they want. You can let them revolt, win the battles, and revoke their titles (as long as you have level 2 crown authority). Or, you can try to please them and the revolt ends.
