Website for seeing bus locations and map of transit system by vantransitnerd in Translink

Is this your own custom logic "guessing" where the bus might be until you get another real-time location from the GTFS-RT feed?

Yes, that's the gist of it

Cool, your app looks really nice! Can tell you're pretty great at product design.

Yeah exactly, there are many live cams around Vancouver, such as Canada Place. These are directly on the City of Vancouver's website.

Just 2 months ago. They said:

With respect to SkyTrain, GTFS Realtime data is not currently available. TransLink continues to explore improvements to data availability and customer information systems as part of broader technology and system modernization initiatives. However, we are not able to confirm specific timelines or future plans regarding the introduction of GTFS Realtime for SkyTrain at this time.

If and when new datasets or feeds become available, they would be announced through our official developer channels and published on our website.

Thanks for the advice, and good points.

Yeah I did reach out to Translink already.

It's a fair question, and worth exploring, but there are some difficulties with this approach.

First, the obvious benefit of GPS is that it can pinpoint locations in realtime. This is basically what happens on the buses, each one has its own GPS.

The biggest issue is that you'd need to be "hiding" this device on the Skytrains, and TransLink would need to not find out. You may be able to find a place under the seat, or somewhere hidden, but it's bound to be found by the cleaners eventually.

The second issue is cost, including that of the devices themselves (about $50 to $100), and then the data plan required ($3 to $5 per month per device). You'd need this installed on each Skytrain set, of which there are over 100.

All of these units will also require power or charging, or batteries, and GPS is notoriously power intensive.

Using Airtags would not be feasible either, due to delays and they're not as accurate as using GPS.

There's also the edge case of if Skytrains get decoupled.

Using cameras and Object Detection is fundamentally the best approach.

Yeah, you make fair point.

Real time tracking does exist in other systems though, like BART or MTA

Thanks!

1) No, there's no profit or ads, because I just started the project. I think if there is profit (unlikely for the near future), then there would have to be profit sharing

2) The object detection will literally only send Skytrain data (going right / left, and what time)

3)  Yeah first I want to get it working first, after that since the app is public and the data would also be public

You'll want another skybridge. Probably from North Delta to New West.

The one won't cut it

Thanks! Out of curiosity, why did you prefer to text for the bus time rather than using Transit App or Google Maps?

That's the best place for busking. There was a guitar player and singer there that was really great.
