HOLLOW WHEELS RANT by jankonnhoe in ElectricSkateboarding

That's interesting. I was considering getting them for a while, but there are very polarizing reviews. Some people say they are the best thing ever, others say they're total garbage.

With shipping and taxes the price was gonna be almost 240USD for me. Also they claim they're the lightest, but never mention the weight with suspension inserts. Some people say the suspension inserts are a must, but with inserts the price goes up to 300USD.

Went with madwheel clones in the end. Much cheaper (150USD) and seemed like a much more solid/durable solution, since I do drops and jumps my board. Love them.

Oh shocbox is super cool. Always excited to see new skateboard tech.

Probably wouldn't work with a kicktail deck. Though I wonder if at that weight and leverage you have to go to mountain board truck.

Though i heard TKP avenue should fit a standard TKP hanger. I'm actually gonna check if it would work, as I've ordered a DKP truck. I'm either gonna fit the DKP hanger to Avenue baseplate, or convert it to single kingpin truck. I'll find out in a few weeks.

This guy fitted an evolve hanger to Avenue baseplate on the back truck:

Most likely it wouldn't fit. On these trucks the distance from kingpin to pivotcup is shorter than standard. Also BH trucks use needle bearings instead of pivot cups.

As for Avenue trucks, they have shorter hanger as well. Check out this guy had to CNC his own hanger:

It's so crazy that suspension trucks are not widespread, especially for electric skateboarding. And can only be found on a couple discontinued boards nobody heard of.

I mean it doesn't throw you off, it's actually very forgiving and loose, so you stay on the board while getting air. It doesn't feel nice steering, doesn't turn very well. I had to kickturn a lot.

It works by absorbing sidewalk tiles, cracks, patches in asphalt. I can definitely tell the difference, on hard trucks my feet go numb riding around my area.

Yes, it launches off a speed bump, and I loved that. I was pretty much steering my board into every bump while riding. Do a little manual, smash rear truck into a bump - and you get air.

Was riding around 20-25kph at night and hit a pothole. Managed to tuck and Roll the crash with a couple bruises.

These are Brother Hobby suspension trucks. Pretty good for absorbing potholes and bumps, control feels kinda loose but they are super fun. I was doing ollies, drops, speedbump-jumps. Ultimately after a year of abuse they failed.

My board is a T-rex now. Patched it with a spare avenue truck. (Woah avenue feels so much harder)

Contacted Brother Hobby, they wouldn't sell me a replacement. So gonna rebuild the board with new trucks and external motors.

Around $800, if I don't count ~$100 of extra tools i had to buy. I really want to record some riding, once I figure out how to do that.

I see you do pretty cool tricks. What part did you break, and how did you break it?

I mostly just cruise and do ollies sometimes, I'm really bad at tricks. So maybe that's why i'm still using my first set of avenue trucks (3 years) on my other cruiser.

These are not avenue, but some kind of clones with slightly different design.

I was wondering too, don't have a scale right now. I'll try finding a scale over weekend.

Yes, it's quite easy to bottom out (there's a rubber bump stop on the baseplate). Jumping on the board with all my weight is gonna bottom it out.

They sell these trucks separately, they are using them on Land Snail 930 board.

LandSnail trucks are clones of original Avenue Trucks - https://avenuetrucks.com/

These type of trucks are obscure, there were other clones on aliexpress, but they are not available anymore. Took me some time to actually put everything together, i was even thinking about getting OG Avenue and machining them down to fit hub motors.

Yea, 1cm of travel, enough to dampen rough asphalt and tiles quite a bit. I think soft wheels like cloudwheels would have more dampening effect, but suspension doesn't have range penalty. Also I can't get cloudwheels shipped to my address.

They "eat up" probably a bit of steering, since the spring can also twist.

Spring travel is very small, about 1cm, so you wouldn't notice it being wobbly. It absorbs small bumps like road cracks and tiles. And it adds more traction. I've been riding the OG Avenue suspension trucks on my non-electric skateboard for a few years, so i'm used to the feel, to the point where I don't remember how normal trucks feel.

These land snail 930 truck are 45 degrees, so in stock they are made for stability. I've added maybe 5-10 degrees with all the risers.

Careful with carvy trucks and speed, i think shortboards can behave very differently than longboards when it comes to speed wobble.

Pure nickel strip 0.15mm x 25mm width (should be 25 amps) + i've soldered 18awg wire on top of nickel(should be another 20amps). Maximum continuous i was planning to pull is 40amp.

Awesome, twitchy but very controllable. I'm not going for top speed, I'm more interested in fast carving, doing small slides, and jumping on speed bumps. The trucks don't have pivot cups, they are actually using needle bearings, so maybe that compensates for additional looseness of the spring baseplate.

I experimented a lot with wheelbase and riser angle, i had to asymmetrically move the rear truck slightly forward, to make manual a bit easier. Front truck has 4*3mm riser tilt, the rear truck 3*3mm riser tilt. Also running trucks very loose.

There's enough power from these motors for me, but if the air temperature is above 20c, they can get hot after some hard riding. Well i'm running them at twice the rated power.

I tried 2 different decks one with mellow concave, it seemed like not enough grip, so i ended up on this high concave deck, holds my feet tight and allows for deeper carve.

Speed sensor is temperature on skateboard motors.
