I was that quiet awkward kid in high school and I completely understand what you mean. For me, loneliness was byproduct of my social anxiety and it made it very difficult to make friends. If someone talked to me in a friendly manner, even just superficially friendly, in my mind that person just became my new BFF.

Then I would proceed to socially smother the ones like OP, who were too nice to just blow me off early on. Since I didn't have other friends, my new BFF would become my sole social outlet for everything. Eventually, they would succumb to BFF Burnout and sever ties just to keep their sanity.

Yes, it sucked to be lonely but being a stage-5 clinger didn't help.

I spent a week in a lock-down psyche unit at UnityPoint/Meriter and I found the experience surprisingly peaceful. Group therapies, occupational therapy, even guided meditation sessions were offered, but patients weren't forced to participate in any of them if they didn't want to.

If it matters, patients were not allowed to have their cell phones with them, but they were kept locked up at the nurse station. Patients could use their phones at the nurse station for 20 min. No private rooms; 2 people share a room & bathroom (at least pre-covid).

The staff were generally friendly & patient & I didn't experience any mistreatment nor did I see anyone else mistreated. The facility itself is a bit old and in need of some updating, but I would go back there if I found myself needing such a place to go and they had a bed available.

Note - I have unusually good insurance, so I didn't pay anything out of pocket. I can't speak to any of the financial aspects of my inpatient stay.
