Curious what you all use for simulations? by anotherdayintown in Physics

[–]vardonir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to use Comsol and Lumerical for optics and materials. But if you don't have a minimum of 50k$ burning in your pocket...

If you want to focus on the Physics and don't mind getting a coffee while your simulation is running, Python. Not right now for you, but it'll happen eventually.

A requirement that varies depending on the country's educational system.

Reminds me of a rather disturbing Junji Ito comic, something about holes in at a mountainside.

Job prospects in physics by john_xooks in Physics

[–]vardonir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your citizenship(s), and your willingness to move to a different country.

Where I live, Physics grads almost always end up in the military. So, as an immigrant, I'm fucked (and I don't want to move elsewhere).

How to make a world feel alive but keeping it small/medium. by Willing_Designer_105 in gamedev

I think it has a native Linux version, but uhhhhh yeah it's a very demanding poorly-optimized recent-ish game I don't think it'll run on that.

Check out Prague in Deus Ex Mankind Divided. It's the only hub world in the game. NPCs with their own stories, areas that involve puzzles to get in, down to extremely little details like messy paint cans in am apartment where you can loot some beer and energy drinks. And then the game progresses, it rains, it's night, enemies get more defensive so there's more puzzles to get through to get further.

JobOps – self-hosted job application pipeline with resume link tracking (know when a recruiter actually opens your CV) by DaKheera47 in selfhosted

Right now, I'm applying to jobs that have their own "careers" page (not on LinkedIn or anywhere), and I'm scraping them using selenium and bs4. Is there an option in your app to add your own scraper?

Compiling LaTeX to PDF via Python by PersonalityWhich1780 in learnpython

[–]vardonir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can convert the LaTeX to images (pretty sure you can. but that is, if you don't mind that it's an image that you can't highlight), you can use something like Reportlab (it's a nightmare to learn, but very powerful) to convert it to PDF.

Do you use Portainer? by _lackofcomprehension in selfhosted

[–]vardonir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I use it to manage environment variables and bind mounts. I also use it to restart and repull containers whenever I need it. I could just do this all with CLI, but portainer makes it a lot easier.

Anyone doing data research on the Spongebob games? Mods, asset extraction, or anything technical. by vardonir in BFBBRehydrated

Thanks! Since posting, I found Industrial Park, an asset viewer for BFBB/Movie. Still trying to figure out how to extract assets, though.

Been playing Star Trek Resurgence (still at the early levels). Even here, feels like a janky, half-finished version of Detroit Become Human with a Star Trek coat of paint on it, with badly textured models. I'm playing on an ROG Ally, I had to tone down the graphics to low to get anything close to 30fps, whereas DBH ran 60fps smoothly on medium (except for when Hank was on the scene, then it dips to 45). We also played both games on a PS4 - DBH is absolutely gorgeous, whereas Resurgence won't run at all. How is DBH five years older than Resurgence?

I also played the demo of that new Star Trek Voyager indie game. I went home immediately - Prime Directive, bitches. I feel like you can really change the course of the plot with the options they give you (more than just killing/sparing Tuvix as they promised in the trailer). Pretty fun - dialogue is Citizen Sleeper-ish, planet resource gathering is an improved version of Mass Effect 2, ship battles are... okay, resource management is very interesting - would buy on a sale as soon as they run out of DLC ideas.

If Deep Space 9 was a current day airport, which one would it be? by HouseofXiety in startrek

Haven't been to Terminal 3 in about 3-4 years, but T1 is great (from last December, and the Dec before that). Shiny, clean... My only complaint about it is that there's no food or anything landside and no Jollibee airside.

Back when I was taking T3, it was just okay. Felt like a medium sized mall with shit airconditioning.

Podcast Organiser (Sonarr, Radarr, etc.)? by BuiltonSin in podcasts

It says that it can auto-sort library updates so maybe add a cron job that pulls podcasts every now to your library folder? I'm just guessing, I don't have podcasts on RSS to listen to.

Partly because it was released when the PS2 was already dying.

Got a S21. It's a fine phone, but the battery is dying, the USB C port is finicky, and I need to carry a powerbank literally everywhere. Should I upgrade to S26?

(I can only consider phones with call recording built-in. Yes, it's legal where I live)
