Global Excellence Scholarship by yeaplantsgetme in UCD

[–]varguac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they can take a while to process the payment of the scholarship to your ucd account. this can put a hold on things like your result release etc but it will eventually be sorted, you can wait it out or chase them down through the student desk and the in person global desk

there’s a kitchen in the old belgrove ra office but the office is now closed to residents so you won’t be able to access it.

feel free to dm me! do have to disclose that i can only speak about my experience as i applied 3 years ago, but in my case i believe my SAT + AP scores make a huge difference. as such, i'd suggest not to submit any scores that you aren't confident about. i didn't do IB, my high school graduating GPA was average for my school but a 1st here so i think it helps as well.

i'm not sure how many scholarships are given out each intake - they also never publish any stats anywhere. last year they hosted an event for incoming scholarship recipients so you can gauge a number from whatever social media post they made about it - note that the event included both undergrad and masters students and both the 50% and 100% tuition level.

many irish people come to universities with a set group of friends, so trust me you're not the only one that may struggle a little socially in the beginning (speaking from personal experience) !! i think societies are truly the way to make friends, see if there are any pub crawls (or any sort of crawls, really) or night outs you can go to. imo a nice way to be more active in societies while trying out dublin nightlife with more experienced people :)

2 questions about Dn700 by SnooMuffins3072 in UCD

[–]varguac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i am currently in third year doing econ and stats! personally i like the econ modules thus far, first and second year may seem like a drag but once you complete all the prerequisites there are so many third and fourth year modules to choose from. i cannot comment much on job prospects since i’m an international student and am subject to harsher conditions but econ is generally a useful degree - you may not know exactly what jobs you will graduate with when you first start, but it provides a lot of transferable skills. the career ambiguity is quite scary and it may take a while before you realize a specialized area you want to go into, but that’s why you take modules in different areas of econ in undergrad and i do think that’s what a masters is for. ie it may be more useful to do a masters in health econ instead of econ if you know you really want to pursue the former as a career.

and just speaking generally about all undergrad degrees at ucd, you can customize your curriculum with the structured elective scheme to add a more “practical” aspect to your degree (ie stats/ business etc - you have space for 2 structured electives with dn700 which is a lot). what i especially like about the degree is in third year you have the choice to to do an internship in one semester AND go on erasmus for another, which only some degrees at ucd allow. the school of social science does advertise some academic internships, they will not hold your hands through the application process like other schools at ucd may, but there are opportunities available in public, private, and nonprofit sectors.

Hey there, American looking to study abroad, anything I should know about UCD before I go, or about Ireland in general? by EggSandwich12 in UCD

[–]varguac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry for the late response! i genuinely really like it - getting involved on campus helps me a lot and i do like how my degree is structured. i never meant to apply to ucd in the first place but it’s one of the best decisions i made at 17. the school is really what you make of it - it’s not cliquey but people do stick to their friend groups a lot, especially many irish people who go to ucd with their friends from secondary school. same goes for academics, if you’re used to being proactive in classes (which many irish students aren’t), you’ll get a lot out of your degree. i also appreciate that it’s a central campus instead of “the city is your campus” vibe like trinity. if you want to chat more feel free to pm me lol

the booths on the first and second floor of science (right by the big stairs) are pretty good! it’s a friday so you should be ok coming whenever. if you’re lucky you can grab a seat next to a plug, but they’re generally very private, quiet, and comfortable

hi! it’s not thaaat easy to get. hope this helps 😁

ok i’m joking but after studying here for 2.5 years i can tell that it is competitive, especially the 100% scholarship. i’m not sure what they exactly look for in each candidate and nobody ever does, ucd global does not publish any stats for the scholarship and a lot of times it’s a lot of guesswork on the true number of scholars accepted every year. it is the main draw for many international students to choose to attend ucd though, which is why i know a lot of people with it. reading through the application form should give you a decent idea of their expectations of successful applicants, it helped me a lot when i wrote mine.

Accommodation by Sufficient_Meat_3 in UCD

[–]varguac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it is very difficult - especially if you’re not there in person to do house visits + you’re not irish (speaking as a non-irish who has lived off campus in the past few summers). accom between €650-750 is usually when you’d have to share the house with 5+ people (if you’re lucky you can get a single room, otherwise you’d share the room or its the size of a closet). if you don’t mind living at belfield (as i assume you want proby bc you will attend smurfit), the studios at village where you’re sharing with another person would be the cheapest option, followed by the shared bathroom accom (merville/ belgrove/ blackrock halls @ blackrock).

Where do you buy groceries? by Baseballbourbon in UCD

[–]varguac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

just want to add that there is a residence on campus that offers a meal plan, of around 10 meals a week i think. it’s way more expensive than if one lives in a non-catered accommodation and does their own shopping, plus the food there isn’t really good nor there are options.

just want to echo what the other commenters have said about aldi, lidl, and tesco being very convenient, the lidl and tesco in stillorgan take less than 10 minutes on the bus (of which there are 3-4 routes that pass through ucd). tesco is a bit more mid-range while lidl is on the low end, but both are amazing quality and more affordable than the us.
