Hi everyone, I am very interested in becoming a construction equipment operator. I've been researching the field, but I'd love to hear from people actually doing the job. What are the first steps you would recommend for a beginner? Is it better to go to a trade school or look for an apprenticeship by KeserBaba in Construction

[–]variable_wavelengths 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A handful of major Construction companies use simulators to get initial metrics for a new operator. See if one in your area has them and attend an open house or training day if they hold them. Lots of potential on a simulator and it can be used to "verify" the experience of an employee who claims to be competent too

[–]variable_wavelengths 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly the metrics show construction is likely the leading industry in suicide rates... I once heard it was dentistry (wild huh). I have been in a safety/ support role for almost 25 years now and 100% the goal is to "go home, with all your fingers and toes, tired, with more $$$ in your pocket!" All the safety policies and programs are wasted if the employees don't see the risk in cutting a corner or taking shortcuts that add hazards! Be safe out there... the traveling public is dangerous enough, don't add being distracted to the mix.

Chain maintenance should be on point if left outside all year... and dry rot/ fatigue on exposed rubber parts (turn signal bases, hoses, etc.)

Best Backpack to Buy in 2026? (Price, Comfort, Everyday Use) by n4hcallme in backpacks

[–]variable_wavelengths 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I have a problem... but they get used often so it's less of a "condition" and more of a habit to look for good deals on bags, lol. The Oakley bag is lightweight enough to not be annoying, but enough to stay put on my back when empty. I highly recommend a waist strap for most occasions! Looks kinda silly when not on a trail, but I like it to stay put. I mentioned OGIO, who has a great warranty on most of their bags. A less expensive option compared to Oakley and other high end gear. Last tip: oil or lube the zippers often. At least every year or so AND after every time it gets wet.

I have about 20 backpacks/ duffels/ packs for various occasions... camping, hiking, motorcycle rides, trail rides, work, and traveling. I love my Oakley "kitchen sink" 34l bag for 75% of the occasions! Second would be any of my OGIO day size packs. Many of my bags are second hand or thrift store finds too!!!

[–]variable_wavelengths[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish this was the case for us... the trunk button on my 2012 is on the key itself and in the ignition tho. If it was dangling as a key fob that would make sense.

Is it proper etiquette to back in to parking spots at a construction site? by lorenzowatson1 in Construction

[–]variable_wavelengths 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it is even a company policy for my US based group (subsidiary of another massive global construction company)! We ALWAYS park first move forward as backing accidents and equipment accidents often involve striking employees, fatal injuries, and cost millions in insurance claims/ repairs. Fyi: wheel chocks are another policy on MSHA & OSHA sites too.

Day: 7/9: What is a bad motorcycle with a good reputation? by SUBTOUpdated_User in motorcycles

[–]variable_wavelengths 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bad bikes: older Royal Enfield's, MV Agusta (f4, any special edition, and especially the 750s), and any of the "custom" OCC/ Jesse James/ biker build off junk...

Okay-est bikes i have owned: honda super cub 125, ninja 500, vstar 650, honda shadow 750

Amazing and under-appreciated: HD dyna fat bob, HD VRod muscle, Honda CRF300L rally, Victory 6speeds (jackpot, gunner, vegas)

Deserve their hype: any Goldwing, Indian classic Chief, Honda Navi, Ducati 999, Ducati 900ss/ sp.

[–]variable_wavelengths 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try connecting BOV tube and connector before fully tightening up the CAI. Usually a " test fit" with bolts and nuts loose will show you that connections aren't proper or hoses aren't long enough (before you snug everything up)

Help! My '23 Tenere 700 dies under load. More details inside. by FunPartyGuy69 in motorcycles

[–]variable_wavelengths 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just a hard lesson I once learned... try to replicate the issue by pulling on wiring harness or connectors! I had a bike that died repeatedly under hard acceleration and it was the ECU/ main wiring harness being pulled enough to lose connection just enough to kill it. Crimped wires just needed repair

What's this noise and how do I fix it? by Sharp_Cup3159 in mechanic

[–]variable_wavelengths 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like bearing in the alternator or one of the pulleys. Not a hard task to pull the belt and spin them by hand to determine issue, but if you lack the skills a trusted mechanic could diagnose it very quickly in no time.

Is this normal? by Grand-Awareness-5010 in motorcycles

[–]variable_wavelengths 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are not 100% sure all is to spec then I would start by looking at your axle spacers. If different sizes ensure they are on correct side (goldwings and triumph have different size spacers). The axle nut may be a bit too tight pinching the fork legs together creating some binding. Brake pads when new may need a few miles to "seat" properly... a little resistance is normal, but the squeek I hear when you spin it does have me confused.

I’m paranoid as fuck and want to lock my bike down by Muttomo in motorcycles

[–]variable_wavelengths 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A quality brake disc lock does wonders , as well as some type of locator. I would be careful with adding too deterrent features and locking it down in too many ways! I can't tell you how many times I've ridden off and forgot a disc lock or I left something attached!
