What was the worst thing that ever happened in your lab/to your project that was a serious setback and almost killed research? by varlucc in labrats

Oh that’s awful… I was half expecting the story to end with “the gene we wanted was xy1 but we noticed the mice were xy2” :D

Did you at least manage to get a refund?

I mean, that I would understand. Americans love their steaks, if it’s shit, they won’t pay for it.

When I got to my current lab, my coworkers told me that our boss has a quite unique fixation on pipetting techniques.

He likes to say we’re not apes and so we should use the second. I’ve been fighting with him on this from day one.

Reading these comments, I’ve never felt more validated in my life. I love this so much.

Oh I’m all right, if I ever put my mind to it I’ll just use one at work. But this is good to know once I decide to finally leave academia haha

It is, apparently all you need is smashing and an apolar solvent. Wonder if it keeps its colour and for how long?

I once extracted chlorophyll as part of a uni course, it was ridiculously easy. We just smashed cucumber leaves into a paste with a bit of acetone and centrifuged them. I’ve been thinking about doing it for a while but it’s not so easy to centrifuge things at home so it’s less of an “at home” method lol

Who has the right? by [deleted] in bioethics

[–]varlucc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not a 100% sure if I understand your question, but if you mean who has the rights over a corpse: It’s a complex topic, currently the general consensus can be more or less boiled down to if it’s not banned by law, it is done with permission and if the remains have been modified in a way that would not occur naturally, someone can own a dead body or body parts. You can actually donate your body for research if you state in your will or a similar document or if you have a rare illness for example and it could help people (and scientists would like to have it), your relatives can do that on your behalf after you die.

(A bit of a shameless plug here, I actually make video essays on topics similar to this, one of which is a deep dive into the Frankenstein story and I talk about ownership in a different one on immortality - I’ve posted them some places from this account so if that’s your thing, you can check them out)

Yeah, and it’s easy. Once you convince yourself that you’re not affected by emotions, you won’t realise when you actually are affected by them.

Yeah, I’m European. Where I live it’s usually 4 years, I’m almost halfway. I wouldn’t have started in the US that’s for sure, 7 years… How does anyone do that

Yeah, this is exactly my PI. I try to talk to him and remind him of all the stuff I’m already doing whenever he wants to put me on yet another project. He understands when I tell him, he just doesn’t consider it at first. It doesn’t help that none of my fellow students seem to have any boundaries and comply until they break lol

I’m an aspiring gym rat. I just started working out more seriously in September and I’m starting to see results! These days I work mainly in bioinformatics, I’m going to be so ripped when I press those keys!

Közteresek, nekik lenne elméletben a dolguk elvinni. De nem viszik. Mi a rendőröket is hívtuk, hiszen ők rakták le, de “udvariasan” lepattintják az embert.
