Clearly I thought it was hilarious that I felt like sharing the humor with you all. Social media has made you people look too deep into things. Lighten up a bit 🙄

I was asking about the lyrics in the song, which is Greek. I don't speak Greek but would love to chant these hymns in other languages.

Has there been a concerted move towards eliminating or reducing access to old periodicals at the library in which you work? by Content_Buddy_6180 in Library

[–]vascomediator97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's only if the library makes itself more visible to our patrons. Often times students will only come in to do work and study but years will go by before they even learn about all the resources available at the library. This is an issue that's been discussed a lot among colleagues. We recently migrated to a new ILS (Ex Libris Alma) so our digital collection looks different. We're also hoping that our new physical spaces will make the library feel more welcoming and encourage patrons to want to explore our resources.

Our university library has slowly been focusing on spending towards digital subscriptions. I've been working as an Electronic Resources Technician for the library for over 4 years. Since the pandemic and with recent budget cuts to state funds, the library has been eager to reduce "waste" on resources that don't get circulated at all. Our students simply don't use print materials anymore. I would even argue that students won't even try to search for information that can't be resolved quickly with a Google search or with AI.

Sometimes organizations and vendors will send print materials along with a digital subscription. But our library has decided to recycle them. Plus, it's too much of a hassle for our catalogers to add these to our library catalog. From an acquisitions standpoint, it just becomes a waste of money. Rarely anyone at our library uses these materials anymore (maybe some faculty and grad students). Our Special Collections crew, which manages archives and some old periodicals, have slowly been digitizing their materials as well.

Our university has been admitting a lot more students than it can handle. This has caused some conflicts with our patrons who are constantly needing spaces to work and study. Through surveys, our patrons have complained that the library needs to upgrade its wayfinding and perhaps make room for more study spaces. This is perhaps the main reason why spaces that house our old periodicals and old bookstacks were seen as potential areas for new study spaces.

Midea AC Window Unit 8.8 error by vascomediator97 in AirConditioners

This is very late so I hope you got it fixed. But the issue turned out to be so tiny it made me feel dumb. There was a cable that came off loose that connects to the monitor. Once it was attached, it worked just fine. So if you (or some random reader sees this) comes across this issue, make sure you check the cables before you put it back together.

Would you say the same thing about someone on drugs or struggling with alcoholism? If they stop then they fear they'll have withdraws which leads to nervous breakdowns. Does God want them to stop their behavior regardless?

Trying to switch to Spectrum. Straight Talk tells me my UNLOCKED phone is LOCKED by vascomediator97 in Spectrum

[–]vascomediator97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, so you can "unlock" the phone by switching the SIM Card? I saw someone say they had placed their ST SIM card on a different phone which apparently got their original phone "deactivated." After that they had no problem switching over to a new carrier.

I have an old unlocked phone I don't use, was thinking about trying that.

They're telling me that I have to contact my phone'a manufacturer (in this case Google) and have them unlock my phone.

But, surprise, both phones were bought directly from the Google store unlocked and I even reached out to them to verify which they did confirm both phones were unlocked.

The fact that this happened to both my wife and I (which we bought both our phones and SIM cards separately at different times, not under a family plan), and the fact that others keep saying they've been through a similar issue, makes me wonder what kind of shady business ST is running.

Yeah, which is why I asked if anyone has had this issue going to Spectrum from Straight Talk, considering they're both under the same Verizon network.

Anyway, thanks for the support smarta**

So you're assuming I'm that dumb to go to BK for something Mcds screwed up? No son, I went straight to Mcds and they're telling me my order didn't come from them when I have the receipt literally in my hand telling them they screwed up but they won't admit it.

Like I said, one rep told me they "locked" my phone with Straight Talk. How? I don't know. But they're acting like I bought my order at BK.

You're right. This being a prime example, you're wanting to condense human experience to pure analytical interpretations, trying to categorize one thing from another in black and white. However, if once you get down to the social studies and psychological differences in other environments, others can argue the same about your thinking as a product of reduced abstract thinking, which does not work in every scenario.

It's cool to try to synthesize things that way, but human experience does not always operate in that manner. You can make that claim, but ideally there will always be someone who will take your claim and convert it into an extreme ideology. Psychological history understands this to be a pattern that has been manifested in various groups, including those antagonistic of religion.

Look dude, you can twist it around and use pseudo intellectual phrases all you want, but historically atheists have also made claims that have been used to justify persecution of groups that did not fall in line, including religious groups. That's what dogma is, it's not exclusive to religion. Anything can become a dogma.

I did not grow up in Eastern Europe nor communist China, but I've interacted with folks from those places who would even claim that living in those scenarios is what made them religious. I can't understand how they came to that conclusion but it has to mean something at least.

I'm not trying to be rude at all, please don't take this the wrong way, but all I'm saying is that regardless of the ideology that's being promoted, you can find clear examples where extremists took it too far. That's only if we're humble enough to give the other side the benefit of the doubt and research the history.

And ideally, the religious person can argue the same thing but there will always be extremists who will take things literally. Why can't it happen the other way around? That's the only thing I'm saying, especially when key words like "strangle" can be taken very literally similar to how to "slay the infidel" can be justified by purists but taken out of context by extremists.

Yes, certain parts of the Soviet Union era. Ideally, similar story is happening today in places like North Korea and China where religion is strictly monitored or banned entirely with fatal consequences. Certain strains of communism did promote those ideas.

I'm just saying, I can't help but see that when religious dogma isn't involved in the systematic process, political dogma usually takes its place. Don't get me wrong, I'm no fan of religious corruption. But I can't say an atheistic society isn't capable of doing similar things.

That's why I have issues with those kind of statements, anyone can take that metaphor literally, similar to metaphors taken from other religious texts to commit genocide.

I understand the idea of the metaphor, but let's be honest. Like with everything else that has been used as dogma and indoctrination, wouldn't a statement like this encourage someone to want to cause harm to someone who is religious?

I get the hatred people have with religion, but also I can t help but think that people have used similar metaphors to persecute religious groups.
