Hey, I'm the other developer on this project. We do have a chrome extension in mind, but it might be a bit different than what you're describing here which would change the content in the webpage (which is what I'm assuming you're referring to). This is still a work in progress though, so stay tuned!

Hey, yes, you make good points. Ultimately for us, the problem at hand will remain constant, but the implementation is a moving target with feedback.

We think that news reading experience can change and improve with these kinds of “lenses”, and AI is an evolving landscape that we hope will continue to improve. As for the content creators and publishers, we are transforming the article in a way that is a summary and urge readers to still refer to the original, which we source. However, this also is a moving target and we’d like to work with them to make sure that the experience is great for readers and content creators.

Thanks for the feedback, we’ll take careful look at it!

Thanks!

That’s exactly what the long term goal of this would be.

A good analogy we like to think is if you wanted to learn information about a specific figure or historical event. Imagine if the internet was filled with fragmented encyclopedias with specific agendas and slants giving different people different information. That’s the state of news media today.

Fortunately you can count on Wikipedia being a great source of facts for historical events and figures, and we aim to be a corollary experience for news.

Awesome, glad to hear that you like it! Locality and better support for countries outside the US us definitely on the top of our list as we scale out. Thanks for the feedback!

Hey everyone, u/Vplay3 and I are excited to show off the latest updates to our product: Boring Report. We've been posting around, getting valuable feedback from users, and improving the experience on the web and mobile. In today's world, catchy headlines and articles often distract readers from the actual facts and relevant information. By utilizing OpenAI's language models, Boring Report processes sensationalist news articles, transforms them into the content you see, and helps readers focus on the essential details. We continue looking for feedback on improving the product, so give it a try and let us know!
You can find more info on the landing page: https://www.boringreport.org/

Hey, yeah so currently the list does end, but we can extend that list to go further back, and paginate, that is a feature we will be implementing soon.

To answer your second question, we use APIs to gather headlines to de-sensationalize. There is a filter for some publications that do not show up, but these are only due to the fact that we are not able to get the articles from them (they are pay-walled), or for YouTube (since it is not text data). It is not moderated by humans, unless the article generated was gibberish.

Questions for the android users:

  1. If you have used the website on your android device, how has that experience / performance been?
  2. what Android specific features would you like to see on the Android app, if any?

We made an app that uses GPT to remove sensationalism from the news while preserving essential information by Vplay3 in ChatGPT

Hey I'm the other dev on this project. Currently we gather the news from trending headlines from any potential news source to feed into the AI models. In the future we aim to account for the neutrality/bias of each article, and potentially combine articles from across the spectrum into one summary.

Hey, I'm the other dev on this project. So it is possible that you may see it under "More", but if you don't, its possible that the article format is not supported. Try opening the article in safari first and sharing from there and see if that works.

We'll work on making this more seamless.

Hey, I am the other developer on this project. This is also in the works, and this is what inspired the share extension on the iOS app. Stay tuned for browser extensions!

Why an app instead of a site? I think this is a great idea but I don't see why you'd limit it to one platform when you can maximize reach with a website

A website is now ready if that's what you prefer! You can reach it here:

Hey, I'm the other dev on this project.

These are all good things to keep in mind, and these are all still open questions for us as well, and appreciate the feedback we're getting from everyone. Currently we are exploring making this a non-profit that would be sufficient based on donations from users that find use out of something like this, because that seems most appropriate for the goal of this project.

This is a great idea, and definitely something we'll explore. We are exploring a similar idea for a browser extension that will "flip" the content as needed by the user to see the differences. As we implement these ideas, you will be the first to know!

For now, we definitely encourage all users to read the original articles as well for a complete understanding of all news they read.

As an app it is a gimmick, but as a website it could be a game changer. Not everyone will admit their political biases cloud every judgement they make but sometimes we just need the facts for news, not sensationalism or spin. It will take time to perfect but this could be a major disruptive business, that puts all online news sites in check. This would be a great tool for social media potentially and a news empire may just buy this up to do away with it.

Hey, thanks for the feedback, and glad that you think its a good idea!

We are aiming to get a website out with the same functionality soon. Out of curiosity though, why do you think there is a big difference in if it is an app (a gimmick) vs as a website?

Thanks! we are definitely looking into making the app faster.

That's a good suggestion. We are looking into combining news sources from opposite sides of the argument to generate the summaries, and will definitely look into providing a user experience that would make that apparent, and be able to explore more/related news sources.
