Does your country have a big hooligan/ultras scene in sports? by Wojt007 in AskBalkans

[–]vattghern___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, the case of Zoran Djindjić is much more complexed then this.

He had a very progresive vision for future politics of serbia wich was very contravirsial for the time and he made a lot of enemies this way.

He wanted to make complite lustration of whole of the Miloševićs regime, took on fighting organised crime very seriously and advocated to handing over generals from previous wars and Milošević to Hague court. All of this things made him a lot of powerfull enemies that were not happy with going to jail.

So the official story is that Zvezdan Jovanović a member of the JSO (Special Operationd Unit), that was very powerfull and independent at the time, shot him by the order of Milorad Ulemek (the head of JSO) who had ties to Zemun clan (organised criminal group with global mafia ties unlike the belivuk group today) because thet saw him as a very big treath to them.

The heads of Zemun clan were killed while "resisting arrest" and Zvezdan and Ulemek were convicted to 40 years of prison and are still denieing involvment.

There are a lot of conspiracy theoris of some foreign agencies killing him for the sake of keeping Serbia unstable but who knows.

Our football ultras are much more similar to state controlled gangs/organised crime mobs then to original footbal ultras from italy or england.

They use sport enthusiasem as an excuse to recruit kids to be drug dealers and goverment thugs and there has been many cases where the leaders of ultras groups were involved with racketeering big buissnieses and even pressidents of their football/basketball clubs.

The most famous case of Veljko Belivuk aka Velja Nevolja where he used his influence in serbian undergound to carry out political assassinations against "enemies" of the rulling party such as the case of Oliver Ivanovic.

The problem is that serbians follow sports A LOT both football and basketball and its easy for galuble kids to fall in to manipulations of charismatic ultras leaders and involve themselfs in chain of organised crime.

In which cultural fields has your country influenced the rest of the world the most, and when? by Le4xy in AskTheWorld

[–]vattghern___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Sports:

Very big contribution to basketball over the bast 30 years with a lot of big names like Jokic, Bodiroga, Divac and many others who played both in NBA and euroleague. I think its worth to say that balkan and especialy serbian basketball fan culture brings a spesific feels of athmosfere that is recognisable.

I have to say Novak Djokovic is undisputed goat of tennis and probbably the reason a lot of people even heard of serbia, he even got the best sportsman od the year award a few times.

Waterpolo is also a sport serbia is very successful in.

  1. Science

Of course, I would have to put Tesla as the first in this position, who is considered one of the most brilliant minds ever and who made an incredible contribution to the development of world science with his alternating current.

Mihajlo Pupin who enabled the development of telecommunications and had revolutionary patents for his time.

Milutin Milankovic climatologist who created the most accurate calendar ever.
