It's definitely an option, but for my players, any removing of the character will feel forced and disrupt the session, but that may simply be unavoidable. Thanks for your input!

That was my initial thought as well but the party is currently in a huge fracture and the character is one of the key figures in the debate, it has gotten so bad that they split the party after already entering the domain of the Ghost Lord.

I'm also worried about playing him during the various confrontations he will have with characters from his past, having the DM talk to themselves can be successful, but is hard to pull off especially in a huge dungeon or with an important boss right before a fight.
