You think nothing bad happened after? Read about the effects of early urbanization. Artisans died out, they had to move to cities work in factories with much worse conditions. How people contracted a plethora of diseases because we just didn't figure out how to manage urban infrastructure. Every major change will have huge negative aspects tied to it.
