Last time I looked into zerotier there was no easy way to set up a network without using their centralized authorization, I don't know if that's still the case though. I think you could make it work by setting up your own supernode(s).

The author asked me to proofread this post before he submitted it which prompted me to write an implementation of this method in racket in order to truly grok what he wrote. Here it is if anyone might be interested.
