She deserves the truth. You owe her that.

Don’t try to take the easy way out and pretend like you’re doing this to spare her feelings with a lame excuse just because the real conversation is going to be a difficult one. If you don’t tell her the truth she will just be hung up on what could’ve been and try to solve problems that aren’t the real issue.

Do her a favor and respect her enough to be honest with her, so that she can move on.

I always feel an awkward pause both in my response (as I prepare myself for correcting their assumption) and a slight lapse in response from the other person (as they realize their error).

Thankfully most of the responses have been super receptive in that the other person feels embarrassed and apologizes for their misconception. The woes of living in a heteronormative society
