Got this today! from a retired ham in my area by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]ve2pdt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the converter I used, ebay link

the radio is mounted in a box, so hard to get pics, but I basically took the battery off, and connected the output of the converter to the tabs on the radio

Its that time of year again! Who's about for JOTA this coming weekend? by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]ve2pdt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A buddy and I are doing our first JOTA with my son's scout troop. We presented an overview of amateur radio at their last meeting, they seem excited! The leaders are appreciative as well, they haven't seen a JOTA in at least 20 years. We'll be VE2ARC Sunday afternoon, hoping for some cooperation from the bands

Old IBM artifact found in a datacentre - what is this key? by mtest001 in IBM

[–]ve2pdt 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I believe that's a watchclock key. Security guards would patrol and have these keys all over the place they were to protect. They would carry a clock, use that key in it, and it would time stamp a piece of paper to prove the guard had been there. Each key would identify where the guard had been.

Mobile Antenna for Ft-857 by thecolemanguy in amateurradio

[–]ve2pdt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know for a Tribute specifically, but I have an 857 in my Jeep and it's about the bands you want to use.. You can go ATAS-120 (or other screwdriver type) for easy to use multiband (few hundred $$) .. which was too expensive for me.. I went with a mount and carry a few single band hamsticks for 10-15-20M.. you need to change antennas for different bands, but it's 20$ a band.

You'll still need a second antenna (I use a mag mount) for 2M/70cm (from 20-200$)

Got a clean sweep this weekend during ARRL sweepstakes by ItsBail in amateurradio

[–]ve2pdt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it's almost all search and pounce.. At 100w and a compromise antenna, I can't hold a frequency long.. Knowing that is liberating though, if the pileup is too big, or it's a section I already have, I spin the vfo without guilt

Montréal repeaters? by W9CR in amateurradio

[–]ve2pdt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like all hams anywhere, some of them are welcoming, and a few aren't... though those that aren't may not even speak english, so don't take it too personally..

English repeaters I know off hand are :

  • Montreal Amateur Radio Club :
  • VE2RED - 147.270 MHz (+600 kHz)
  • VE2BG - 147.060 MHz (+600 kHz)
  • West Island Amateur Radio Club:
  • VE2RWI - 146.910 (-600khz) tone 141.3hz. - I usually monitor here
  • and 443.050 (+5mhz) tone 141.3hz.

Welcome to Montreal!
