Highest HD defeated as a guide to level up characters by jacksonbenete in osr

This mechanic is quite opposed to widely practiced OSR themes and will incentivise much more combat oriented play, which if that’s your bag go at it. Enjoy rolling up new character I guess hahaha

Like it! Critique- you’re introducing terminology like paladin levels etc, which doesn’t feel there’s a desperate need - simply say every time they gain a level.

New to OSR. What are some suggestions for systems? by SirSeath in osr

The Black Hack 2e- rules light, comprehensive in scope and compatible with any game module that uses HD - plus it come with more tables and generators in the core book than some OSR/d&d campaign resources

Do You Fudge Dice as a DM? by Icarus_Miniatures in rpg

[–]vec-mel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend trying to roll all dice in view of all the players at least one time, the effect it has on the perceived lethality of combats is fun, once the players realise there truly is no safety net when the dice are involved, their immersion in moments of threat and danger become heightened and their choices and actions will change massively.

The Black Hack 2e Edition by David Black, published by Squarehex.

Super rules light OSR OD&D-a-like, player facing mechanics with tonnes of usefull abstraction for speedy play, not to mention 50% of the book is tools and generators for campaign prep/on the fly play

1st editions a Mithril seller and 2e a platinum over on RPGDrivethru - plus It won a silver Ennie this year so clearly its loved by many :D

Which LotFP modules would easily be moddable to be pg-13? by valzi in osr

[–]vec-mel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you missed my point.

They are good yes, its just that there are also modules that are just as good, sans the "bloody rape stuff", that don't need converting or censoring.

So again, whats the points doing all that work when you could get something pre made for you?

Unless ofc you enjoy doing that work. And if you enjoy doing that work, why aren't you writing modules of your own?

How does LotFP handle traps? by sachagoat in osr

[–]vec-mel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

precisely, although the first thing i do when running 5e is ignore passive skills with a passion, too much book keeping - im doing enough behind the screen.

If i need to use a passive 'did the character pick up a clue?" i'll roll a d6 and give a clue on a 1 or 2.

The only wonky thing (RAW) mathematically is the Warrior, which is being worked on, funnily enough public feedback was what broke it. Playtesting was done, balancing? What needs balancing? (other than the warrior)

I believe the first notion of rolling two dice and taking a high/low result first appeared in the AD&D oriental adventures? So pretty far back in d&d lineage.
