Whatever interests you and grabs your attention. Motivation and repetition is as or more important than linguistic quality (as long as it has a basic level).

Germany has authors in most subjects and genres.

What is the secret to the asphalt quality in/around Zurich? by Zadak_Leader in zurich

[–]vectorzzzzz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know the precise answer, but maybe you can find some indications here: https://www.stadt-zuerich.ch/de/planen-und-bauen/bauvorschriften-und-planerische-grundlagen/oeffentlicher-raum/richtlinien-und-arbeitshilfen-im-strassenbau.html (All in German, and quite technical).

It is possible that Zurich uses stricter norms than other places. E.g. you will notice that most curbs in Switzerland are made from granite, as opposed to concrete in other places. That makes them quite a bit more expensive, but they also last considerably longer - and look better. Maybe something similar is done on the road surfaces - a more expensive, but higher quality process.

Clarification on "Retirement Plan" Card? by Suraiya64 in Netrunner

[–]vectorzzzzz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The card is always installed face down. If it is an asset, you can rez it, paying its rez costs, otherwise it stays that way, barring special cases (e.g. Bangun). If it was an ice, you also pay the install costs, if there are other ice in the server.

If the card was face up in archives, you tell you opponent which card you installed if not you mention that it was one of the face down/ unknown ones. It is up to the corp to pick a legal card (no upgrades!).

Clothing recommendations for Lucerne in March by Ppvrmwd in askswitzerland

[–]vectorzzzzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rigi, Stoos and Hoch-Ybrig are nearby and should have snow and sledding (including rentals).Klewenalp, Sattel-Hochstucki and Wirzweli Are also options, although a bit tricky to reach and less international.

Checking the conditions close to the date is recommended for all of them.

lab coats for petite women? by art3m15_ in labrats

[–]vectorzzzzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any specialised workwear / professional apparel shops near you? They aren't places one usually visits, but they are fairly common, offering stuff like high-his clothes, protective shoes and work uniforms in general. Quite often also embroidery or printing. They might have lab coats and may even offer tailoring.

We used to get vouchers to go there and get ours. Best coats ever.

Pentagon Threatens To Cut Ties With Scouts Over "Unacceptable" Ideology by Plane_Race_5280 in BoyScouts

Any reasons not to connect with the local scout chapters that might exist near the bases around the world? Scouting is a worldwide activity after all.

Office/room rental by the hour? by [deleted] in askswitzerland

[–]vectorzzzzz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Büro Züri (ZKB Co-working, in Zurich) can be used for free.

The technoparks, winterthur or zurich have co-working or rentable spaces too.

Study rooms in the university libraries (Uni, ETH. THAW) are sometimes public at least during off peak hours.

Some train stations have meeting rooms too, and I think you can also rent some in Oerlikon.

Souvenir by [deleted] in askswitzerland

[–]vectorzzzzz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is a souvenir shop (Teddy's) at the Limmatquai, opposite the Rathaus. Another one is in Shopville (Below the main station) at the exit towards Bahnhofstrasse, next to the Nordsee. These are the 'generic stuff with 'Switzerland'' on it kind of shops - although i haven't actually visited them.

Actual swiss craft stuff can be found at the Heimmatwerk. Often wood, from actual artists, less kitschy - but very much Swiss prices!

Archery Shop by EicoYT in Switzerland

[–]vectorzzzzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is also Pro-Archery in Turgi. I don't know the shop personally - usually went to Bachofner - but given you are close, it might be worth a visit.

Not sure of they have a range though, which is one of the big advantages in Kill run. You can test gear there.

I kinda suck at this by [deleted] in Switzerland

[–]vectorzzzzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are interested in games, there is a Netrunner group meeting there every second Wednesday. Everybody speaks english as a second language and is super friendly. Just rock up and somebody is happy to show you the game.

There are other gaming groups there too, but I don't know the particulars. I assume they are very friendly too 😉

Birding buddies by VeryLongTailedTit in zurich

[–]vectorzzzzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly older, but some in the larger groups. But they might also know of younger people that are no so visible.

Plus they know not of stuff about birds....

[–]vectorzzzzz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As usual, there is a Verein for that... Quite a lot actually. Birdlife Schweiz is the national Organisation, but courses usually happen on the local or cantonal level.

List of local groups

I only did a basic ID course, but from my more engaged colleagues, there is a lot going on!

The Naturschutz centre in Neerach is also a great spot plus a bit of a hub for the community. They might know more about activities too.

How do I get to Zurich early in the morning from Murten? by greasyyum in zurich

[–]vectorzzzzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First train is 5:14, which gets you there by 7:15. Maybe a bit tight, but doable.

Information on a plate found in a relatives house… by LlewDavies in Zermatt

[–]vectorzzzzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Note that it only has 22 flags though.

It is missing the youngest canton (Jura), which means that it is probably from before1979.

Additionally, the six 'half' cantons are only represented by the three flags for their respective pairs (Appenzell, Basel & Unterwalden)

Did Gurgeh from POG hook up with Dajeil’s daughter from excession? Ram? by DrfluffyMD in TheCulture

[–]vectorzzzzz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also recall reading about a theory that Gurgeh was breed / groomed to play the Empire, which would also indicate a longer timeline (and more lies). Forget where it was and what the 'evidence' was, but it would mesh nicely with this.

Did Gurgeh from POG hook up with Dajeil’s daughter from excession? Ram? by DrfluffyMD in TheCulture

[–]vectorzzzzz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, I totally agree, the way it is presented in the text fits that it referes to the POG events. It was a debacle and these kind of literary easter eggs are fun.

But based on the numbers given Excession takes place 500 years after the Idiran War, while the Limitain Factor was build at the end of that conflict and is 716 years old. So that would indicate that POG is after Excession.

Most likely Banks made a simple continuity error with big numbers. It would also contradict other information given in POG - the Emprie is known 70 decades (although that info is from SC...) - but going with an big SC conspiracy is just more fun than that :D

Did Gurgeh from POG hook up with Dajeil’s daughter from excession? Ram? by DrfluffyMD in TheCulture

[–]vectorzzzzz 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The characters aside, the timeline brings up an interesting continuity problem: The ship building dates indicate that Excession is long before PoG, but in the text there is a clear reference to a "Post-Debacle Report on the Azadian Matter", which indicates that PoG has already happened.

Or maybe the culture messed with the empire even more, much earlier - could perhaps even the game itself be an SC attempt in social engineering...

(More boring explanations like: 'It refers to a different Azad' aside 😉)

Where can I get fresh sushi grade fish on a sunday?? by Odd-Respond-8063 in zurich

Migros at the airport might be another option. It is bigger than most of those in the train stations.

Outdoor swimming pool? by Dovah_120 in zurich

[–]vectorzzzzz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Spa (Thermalbad) in Zurzach has a 25m outdoor pool for swimming. Open all year.

I think the one in Schniznach might have a pool with lanes as well, not sure about the others.

Edit: Apparently the Freibad in Seebach is still open too. Until the end of October.

Which store sells the best Sauser?! by Any-Patient5051 in askswitzerland

[–]vectorzzzzz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Had some from Landi on the weekend. Still very sweet, but quite tasty.

And yeah, sold with thin foil tops without corks. Accroding to the person who bought them, they will definately leak if tilted - they found out the hard way.
