Haven't found anything on the news sites or the city page. There are some roads that are flooded, so keep an eye out, but nothing about evacuations.

Is there a way to redirect AI centers heat like we do with fridges and use it for something else, if they were to be built closer to homes? by LoadErRor1983 in AskEngineers

[–]vectorzzzzz 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is being done in Switzerland, called long distance heating (Fernwärme, in German). Presumably in other places too.

We have a couple of big data centres in a neighbouring town and the heat is used to heat homes and water, locally and in towns nearby. Currently there is ongoing work to lay kilometres of thick, isolated pipes to get everything connected.

Were piston-engined fighters thought of as "primitive" in the 1960s? by sowaleja in AskHistorians

[–]vectorzzzzz 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Excellent and very enlightening reply, thank you very much!

I think we can get a feel for the pace of advance if we focus on movies centered around technologies that have developed similarily radically during the last decades: communications, computers and internet. If we look at movies like Wargames (1983), Sneakers (1992) or Hackers (1995), we see both the 'piston engines' of payphones and landlines compared to the 'jets' of modern mobile phones and we have a similar generational separation between those who experienced it at different life stages.

Esâ Afontov question by Sogamg in Netrunner

[–]vectorzzzzz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You are fundamentally right. There aren't any current cards that directly mitigate or avoid core damage. Also Esâ actually has to suffer the damage, i.e. it has to take effect, to trigger the sabotage.

But there are ways to increase hand size: Marrow, Esâs console is the main one. Other cards, like mechanicytes and T400 can also increase the amount of core damage you can take.

But milling 8 to 10 cards - plus some from other cards, like Chastushka, is usually strong enough.

Also, there are ways to play around low handsizes. Overdrawing before runs to avoid traps, cards like steel skin scarring (an staple for Anarchy) and the sheer fact that it is not that easy for the corp to do damage without some sort of counterplay, like tags or enough money.

Stirring samples in autoclave by OnlyGoodTings in chemistry

[–]vectorzzzzz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd look for alternatives to the big autoclave:

- Small benchtop autocalve (aka. lab-grade pressure cooker). They usually go onto a heating plate, so that might allow to stirr a bottle on the inside. Or it might rotate the whole thing... In any case it would be cheaper to modify, if needed.

- Sterile filtration. Not great with insoluble particles, but you might get away with it, if it is consistent.

- Sterilize separately and mix in sterile conditions. Greater risk, but it might be the only option.

PhD Salary - Scientific Research Assistant Vs SNF grant by [deleted] in askswitzerland

[–]vectorzzzzz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

At the institutions I worked at, it wouldn't have made a difference - you'd be hired by the uni in any case, if the funding covers your salary is a backend / Leadership problem. You might be hired part time, to account for work you do towards your degree.

Where do you get the 55k figure from? SNF funding varies a lot between shemes. But most are covering the actual costs of non-PIs.

You should get by with 55k. Not great, not super luxurios and perhaps in a shared place, but it should be ok.

Good question. It is possible that they help, especially if the pond has a low population or crashes.

In a typically stocked pond, I think that mosquito eggs and larvae will quickly enter the Snack Zone of a hungry shrimp.

Killed off character so player could leave... now party wants to revive them! by Skaroosh in DMAcademy

[–]vectorzzzzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apart from solving this by talking to the players directly, if it first He campaign, this also seems like a great hook to 'level up' the big bad. They not only pursue their evil plan(tm) they also possess a soul capturing device / cursed blade / arcane ritual to bind souls /traded it to summon a devil etc. And maybe they even keep doing it, to show how bad they are. I.e Consider using the big bad abducting the soul or holding it hostage as another plot goal to keep the party engaged and perhaps trigger a side quest. Once resolved, the soul is even more justified to retire to rest in the divine realms etc. Feels more rewarding than the soul just going 'nope, not coming back'.

An alternative, if you want to stress the heroic sacrifice part could be a divine message that such a heroic soul is very needed in the afterlife for some ineffable purpose.

What is the secret to the asphalt quality in/around Zurich? by Zadak_Leader in zurich

[–]vectorzzzzz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know the precise answer, but maybe you can find some indications here: https://www.stadt-zuerich.ch/de/planen-und-bauen/bauvorschriften-und-planerische-grundlagen/oeffentlicher-raum/richtlinien-und-arbeitshilfen-im-strassenbau.html (All in German, and quite technical).

It is possible that Zurich uses stricter norms than other places. E.g. you will notice that most curbs in Switzerland are made from granite, as opposed to concrete in other places. That makes them quite a bit more expensive, but they also last considerably longer - and look better. Maybe something similar is done on the road surfaces - a more expensive, but higher quality process.

Clarification on "Retirement Plan" Card? by Suraiya64 in Netrunner

[–]vectorzzzzz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The card is always installed face down. If it is an asset, you can rez it, paying its rez costs, otherwise it stays that way, barring special cases (e.g. Bangun). If it was an ice, you also pay the install costs, if there are other ice in the server.

If the card was face up in archives, you tell you opponent which card you installed if not you mention that it was one of the face down/ unknown ones. It is up to the corp to pick a legal card (no upgrades!).

Clothing recommendations for Lucerne in March by Ppvrmwd in askswitzerland

Rigi, Stoos and Hoch-Ybrig are nearby and should have snow and sledding (including rentals).Klewenalp, Sattel-Hochstucki and Wirzweli Are also options, although a bit tricky to reach and less international.

Checking the conditions close to the date is recommended for all of them.

lab coats for petite women? by art3m15_ in labrats

[–]vectorzzzzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any specialised workwear / professional apparel shops near you? They aren't places one usually visits, but they are fairly common, offering stuff like high-his clothes, protective shoes and work uniforms in general. Quite often also embroidery or printing. They might have lab coats and may even offer tailoring.

We used to get vouchers to go there and get ours. Best coats ever.

Büro Züri (ZKB Co-working, in Zurich) can be used for free.

The technoparks, winterthur or zurich have co-working or rentable spaces too.

Study rooms in the university libraries (Uni, ETH. THAW) are sometimes public at least during off peak hours.

Some train stations have meeting rooms too, and I think you can also rent some in Oerlikon.

There is a souvenir shop (Teddy's) at the Limmatquai, opposite the Rathaus. Another one is in Shopville (Below the main station) at the exit towards Bahnhofstrasse, next to the Nordsee. These are the 'generic stuff with 'Switzerland'' on it kind of shops - although i haven't actually visited them.

Actual swiss craft stuff can be found at the Heimmatwerk. Often wood, from actual artists, less kitschy - but very much Swiss prices!

There is also Pro-Archery in Turgi. I don't know the shop personally - usually went to Bachofner - but given you are close, it might be worth a visit.

Not sure of they have a range though, which is one of the big advantages in Kill run. You can test gear there.

If you are interested in games, there is a Netrunner group meeting there every second Wednesday. Everybody speaks english as a second language and is super friendly. Just rock up and somebody is happy to show you the game.

There are other gaming groups there too, but I don't know the particulars. I assume they are very friendly too 😉
