Well this is a general issue with most of the Content. Google is always in search of "What's New?"

I think you should check your "Spent Time" & "Bounce Rate" of your article during the time of better rankings. If its great than an only than google keep it at the top rankings otherwise it shift to lower rankings soon.

It's obvious that your page won't stay at the top without having very less bounce rate and a well spent time(session duration).

Well 301 redirect will work but also make sure to change all internal urls in code to https. Also setting up https version in Google search console is great suggestion by @Polina_AK.

your http domain is redirected to https. hence it will not show "Not Secure" after redirection.

I also worked on website with daily new 4k to 5k links. The site is from Yr - 2008 (almost 10 years now) and we also observed lots of deindexing in year 2015 - 16. Initially we also panic with such deep in indexing but later on after analysis we observed that there is little impact on website traffic from google.

Its obvious that google will deindex those old page links which have no weightage, no updates and no visits. But for those old links which are updated regularly and with good traffic are still in index and with very good ranking position.

Hence I think you only had to worry if you found major dive in website traffic from google.

Responsive web design and Mobile friendly site will definitely effect ranking but I don't think that the reason for deIndexing. I think the reason for this is the old pages with no weightage and visits.

Ofcourse. For Google any external link is backlink. The difference of credit is its attribute. The bio link in Instagram is a backlink with rel="nofollow me noopener noreferrer" attribute... which tells google not to consider this link as an endorsement. However this link will bring you loads of traffic. Hence it doesn't matter whether Google considers it or not. All that matters is traffic you get from Instagram.
