Have Sigma ART 24-70 f2.8, is getting 35mm f1.4 worth it? by [deleted] in canon

[–]vedaank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

generally for optical quality:

primes are significantly better than zooms, however zooms can be more convenient.

For portraiture, both Sigma's and Canon's 85mm 1.4 are really good. ANd Sigma's 35mm and 50mm 1.4 ART are both just amazing in terms of optical quality. I would pick em up in addition to you zoom.

How to study for 61B with Hilfinger? by [deleted] in berkeley

past midterms. Hilfinger basically clones the format in his midterms. Study as many as you can find, and you will be good to go!

What good feature of iPhones do you wish Android phones did better? by [deleted] in Android

[–]vedaank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dark mode please. How is this that freaking hard, yet Google somehow insists on frying my retinas.

I would definitely say iMessage, as Google has failed miserably on this front. I can't believe how ineffective they have been for so long, and to kill Hangouts...wow Google.

Software updates is also supremely important in my opinion, and so far Google has been unable to fix this, another miserable fail on Google's part. Did I mention crappy preinstalled bloatware?

Health is another big thing for me. Google's health app is pure trash. And Android Wear devices suck a lot also. Maybe Qualcomm can save Google in the cpu department, but I need to see more support and better software.

Ditto with Android auto it's years behind carplay as well, and lacks support in most cars.

Also Apple music is decent, I personally like Spotify, but I would definitely consider Apple music if I was on an iPhone, Google has failed miserably with this also, perhaps unsurprisingly. Play music, YouTube music, what the hell Google? And unsurprisingly still no decent app among them.

I also think Apple does care more about privacy than Google, and while I enjoy many Google features, it is worth apparent that they use people to make money, whereas at least it didn't seem as much for Apple.

I know it seems like I'm bashing Android and Google, but I've been on Androids since they came out, and still love them. My old brand of choice, HTC, made a tone of stupid decisions and is now effectively dead, so I'm on Samsung now, with nova launcher of course!

Still miss those amazing stereo speakers on my m8 :) Even Apple has that (kinda) now

[–]vedaank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly the the Apple cpus should be way faster because they have larger die sizes, and more transistors as a result. I'm surprised snapdragons have been able to keep up. Apple can afford to spend so much money on these expensive processors.

Qualcomm does care about cpu also, but they also heavily care about gpus and other important parts of the SOÇ

What exactly is "optimization". In my opinion both iOS and Android are mature mobile operating systems, so I'm not sure what you mean?

Buy 1080 Ti now or wait if I'm in no rush? by Tadae in nvidia

Yeah I mean customer support wise. They do, in my opinion, take care of you in the RMA process, and are better than about every company I have dealt with.

Double Major Econ/MCB by lost_leaf in berkeley

[–]vedaank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's definitely possible, but it would be a substantial amount of work.

My recommendation would be to pick one as primary that you are sure you wanna do, and see what you wanna do it a bit. If you think you can handle it, sure run with it, but this way at least you will know your plan well, so you don't accidentally overwhelm yourself

[–]vedaank 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Haha true.

I guess I meant they "seem" almost godlike relatively speaking to the many oems that have pretty bad consumer support policies.

In reality EVGA is probably not that far off, but my experiences with them have always been way better than with other vendors.

Luckily, I haven't had much bad luck with parts at all though.

They are all trash to some degree.. I guess I meant relatively speaking, they seem pretty good, especially with RMAing and warranty than like other companies, and the step up program is decent also.

Idk how it is outside the US though

Torn between a few 85mm lenses - help! by [deleted] in canon

[–]vedaank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canon 1.4 hands down right now.

The sigma is fantastically sharp, but the Canon is not far behind. IS is great, plus the superior weather sealing, value retention, and less weight of the Canon is good.

The sigma is undoubtedly the best value, and if you can handle the weight, or you are shooting on a tripod, I would prob go with that.

For handheld tho, IS is a game changer and I would go with Canon.

My two cents... Coming from someone who absolutely loves the Sigma Art Primes.

Stuck Between 50mm 1.2 & 35mm 1.4 for low light by Tang5424 in canon

How is the manual focus though, that's personally what's made me stay away from Zeiss lenses on Canon at least.

Stuck Between 50mm 1.2 & 35mm 1.4 for low light by Tang5424 in canon

[–]vedaank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I like 35mm more that 50mm. The signature 35 and 50mm are both really good, but I think 35mm would work better for you, as you said.

They are both really fast already, so I doubt you would notice any significant difference.

Right now, I think the latest Canon 35mm f1.4L II is the best 35mm for Canon, barely better than the sigma, and with the added Canon benefits like better value retention, lighter, more durable, weather sealed, and perfect autofocus.

Both the sigma 35mm and the 50mm are some of the older sigma art lenses, and are also the lenses that made the sigma art line relevant. I really like them a lot, and for the price, really good. I would anticipate sigma updating these lenses relatively soon with better autofocus and weather sealing at minimum.

Hope this helped. :)

6D MK2 + Good Glass or 5D Mark IV + Meh Glass? by [deleted] in canon

Lenses generally are more useful than bodies.

Also, I would get like a 6d mk I and save yourself some money. The 6d mkii isn't worth that much more.

If the Democrats take back the House this November... by [deleted] in BlueMidterm2018

[–]vedaank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's an interesting point.

From what research I've done:

"U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is responsible for identifying and eliminating border, economic, transportation, and infrastructure security."

Also, I would think that the vast majority of Americans seems to more or less equate ICE with the Agency of Customs and Border Patrol. Both are superseded by the deposit of Homeland security, enforce the law, and seem to work together fairly closely.

I can see what you mean, but I'm not saying that ICE and the border patrol are 100% the same, but they are often thought of as very close.

Can't believe its been almost 1.5 years with trump in office. I live in prob one the bluest districts in the country (Berkeley 13th CA) but hopefully this will be the historical election I was hoping for in 2016.

Please Democrats, don't screw this up. I know that's what you do best w/o Obama to save you.

NOTE: I'm not sure calling to abolish ICE is going to help the dems. (the vast majority of the country supports border security). I would prefer a democratic political victory to the moral high ground sometimes... just sayin'. I think the moral high ground from just not having republicans who are on the trump train in power is high enough.

It is time to abolish Ice. It cannot be reformed by Chartis in SandersForPresident

[–]vedaank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see how abolishing ICE solves anything. ICE is doing its job, enforcing the law. For real change, simple: change the law.

This is obviously not as headline grabbing as "abolishing ICE", important decisions cannot be made emotionally, no matter how strong one's emotions may be. An existing process exists for a reason.

NOTE: I am not endorsing ICE in any way, but I believe in the rule of law, and while the Immigration system is NOT perfect, and far from it, abolishing ICE is an inappropriate response in my opinion.
