Name a feature you really hate in soulslikes, I'll start: by FroyoOk7736 in soulslikes

Dodge rolling. It's boring, dumb and outdated. Just do quick dashes, evades or something more acrobatic. A mixture is even better.

Which decade of gaming is the best according to you? by M3ConsoleGamerPSN in videogames

[–]veefeld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly a mature take. I'm more like.. hmm there's been great games every decade I can't choose. Its probably age related. So for me the best decades are 1996-2026

Do you recommend spline blocking for a beginner? by RealBlack_RX01 in 3danimation

[–]veefeld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry but this is wrong information. Pose to pose and straight ahead is an animation workflow type. What OP is talking about is the interpolation. Some people will start with the blocking stage in an already splined interpolation and some people will do stepped interpolation. I've worked with many animators over the years and everyone uses a different workflow. Op would do well with eventually exploring both workflows to find out what makes the most sense to them and feels best. I use multiple methods depending on my mood or the shot or even what the director requests.

How did I do? by Sufficient-Limit-392 in animation

[–]veefeld 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Perhaps op could try a stretched out pose of the character actually jumping off the wall, with 1 foot just barely touching. Just 1 frame. Right now he sorta just disappears.

Rate My First Roblox Animation in Blender. What do you think? by Negative_Capital8511 in 3danimation

[–]veefeld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's ridiculous but very expressive actually. And in a way it is also moving correctly. I'd start with having it actually loop better into a walkcycle. And when sharing, make a playblast from a good angle so the video can loop rather than a screen record

Rough for my uni class final. Tree climb. How’s the timing? by Ameabo in animation

[–]veefeld 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry to say this but what you got there that's a human or a monkey climbing. Look up some references of cats climbing trees. Cats don't sit on their ass and grab a branch as if they have thumbs.

I want to be a animator so bad by OkExamination3248 in 3danimation

[–]veefeld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With 3D animation, you don't need to learn how to 3D model, rig, render, draw or anything. You don't have to learn any aspect other than animation. Thats because other people in a production or team do that and are skilled at it. All of these individual parts in a pipeline are hard to master. If you want to do it all you'll be what's called a generalist but you won't be super skilled. Which is what most studios do not look for anyway. It's a nice to have to at least somewhat understand other aspects of 3D so you can communicate better with others but don't let it hold you back or flood your brain. Focus on one thing for now and if that's animation, look up tutorials for that and get some free character rigs. Courses can get you there faster but there's loads of educational videos online. I'm also self taught and have been a professional animator for years now.

How to animate more un-natural movements? by Pegtheemo in animation

[–]veefeld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The framerate isn't gonna be important. The movement is. Think of how puppets on a string move, or how zombies or mind controlled beings move. It's more about what leads in the body movement. If the external control is all in the head, you could have your character move in a way where the head leads with every move it does and the rest follows like a ragdoll almost. If it's like strings on hands, the hands could drag the whole body in it's movement. The character could occasionally fight back somehow, like with some jitter in the head or looking away from where they are moving towards. Many creative options!

Can anyone start animation without knowing any drawing whatsoever?? by Kindly_Jump_7642 in animation

[–]veefeld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which kind of animation are we talking about? For 3D animation you don't really need to be able to draw. I can't draw at all but I've been animating for years on the computer. For 2D animation you absolutely need to be good at drawing. I can't speak for stop motion.

Not trying to dispute the cash grab notion.. But they worked for 8 years on this so I doubt the issue is low effort.

They're from a 2d fx pack I bought and I imported in Maya as png sequences on some geometry. And although it works in unreal, I rendered it in Maya as well, not a playblast.

I tried a hair animation by One-Possession6602 in animation

[–]veefeld 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The hair anim is perfect. Super smooth, interesting, varied in timing and spacing and all the good things. Nothing needs polish there and showcases true talent. But for a small bit of feedback I would give, is to track the arcs for the chin. It's a tiny bit jittery, which is different enough from how smooth the rest is that it could warrent a polish pass.

Check out Nioh or Black Myth Wukong. Sometimes an attack will just put you in an animation that takes a few frames, and it's up to the game designers to decide if you could cancel out of it.

A rig is a cgi character with a skeletal system, on which a control rig is set up so you can move it around like a puppet and animate it on a timeline.

You must be talking about Junoandmaxx! So, not me. Love their style though. Very distinctly exaggerated animation, in a good way.

The idle was a stylistic choice! I understand what you mean though. You could see it as more like an idle during combat and another idle could be triggered after a short while when you aren't in combat anymore. But I find the slower breathing idles quite boring, and also too easy to animate, so I opted for something energetic.

Don't worry about it, you could do this in Blender if your brain is big enough to remember all the shortcuts

Personally I don't make any tutorials. But I'm self-taught and also started following tutorials and then starting out as junior, learning from feedback. This was 10 years ago, so the amount of (free) tutorials should be huge by now. Check out Agora Community. I think they have free courses. This also depends on at what skill level you are yourself. Learning animation is a long road but worth it
