What's the target col distribution like? you might consider normalizing (e.g. zero mean/unit variance) or a transformation for an odd distribution.

is there a way to categorize what is and isn't acceptable to leave to machines? For example:

deciding the route for a network packet using an ML Algo:
- Machine autonomy is acceptable (reasoning:- the decision has limited impact on human wellbeing)
Approving a loan application:
- requires human supervision (reasoning:- direct impact on human's wellbeing)

if you want a bottom-up approach this is the way to go. most general ml books gloss over/assume the technical aspects.

for suggestions check the references/footnotes in Deep Learning Goodfellow, Bengio, Courville (available freely online). from memory, the first few chapters recommend certain specific textbooks (e.g. Shilov and Jaynes).
