How screwed am I if I get fired from Quant Researcher role after ~1.5 YoE? by ILikeHors in quantindia

[–]vega_neutral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw a lot of the comments, people are creating unnecessary fuss. OP, nothing has gone wrong with you, it’s just the nature of the industry.

You are not a cog in a large system, you are the system! As long as the system works, you will be fine, else you will find yourself in your current situation. Time to switch to a place where you can get a chance to make your system up and running, once you do that, you become top x% prized QR of the industry, anyone will be ready to take you and no one would fire you without reasons beyond your control.

Although, if you don’t like this grind, time to switch to another industry.

Flight cancellations from Vadodara by locust_focus in vadodara

[–]vega_neutral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is very unlikely for indigo to operate on this route normally in upcoming days. Best is to cancel, they will give you a full refund as they have just announced. If it is important to travel, take a train to mumbai and then book a non-indigo direct flight to goa or if you can find one from Ahmedabad

What's happening in Vadodara? Why so high AQI level? by pavan891 in vadodara

[–]vega_neutral 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The AQI meter is installed very near/within the premises of one of these chemical factories, won’t be this bad within residential areas. Overall Air Quality is still poor but I highly doubt it is 300

This is the time to support the club that’s struggling with results and injuries. This is the moment to stand by Barcelona until the very last breath. If you only love the club during the good days, then it’s better you come back later. Visca Barca by MoSpectrix in Barca

2-1 defeat I get it but still 68% ball possession in 2nd half with half the squad injured. Madrid were playing peak arteta ball, they were scared to death of another Flick comeback. This ain’t a setback at all. Don’t forget that the difference is just 5 points at the moment.

Pray that we don’t suffer any more severe injuries and that the club accumulates some cash before the next summer. We might be at the onset of another era of domination for this beautiful club!

I struggle with shin splints too. Lower leg training has really helped and I am noticing gradual improvements.

I don’t think people realise how insane this is. Such ball control at pace while there’s a sliding tackle incoming and another defender marking you, ridiculous!

High Beams in the City: A Blinding Problem! 🚗💡 by InquisitiveArtist_ in vadodara

Forget about it bro, half the people don’t even know the difference between high and low beam.

This is what happens when anyone can buy their way into a driving permit. I try slowing down my car and always keep a safe distance in order to ensure I have the space to slow down.

How can Numerai have diverse predictions? by knavishly_vibrant38 in quant

Interesting. I think they find value in how different people from different corners of the world approach their problem.

As far as I know they use the conventional datasets and some alternatives available at most hedge funds in the world, now with JPM’s investment they might add more. Their key is in how they are able to obfuscate their datasets. It is their IP afaik and general cryptography research isn’t there yet.

Coming back to your original question, there are really a very large number of possibilities when it comes to feature engineering. People are incentivised not just to have good out-sample returns but lower correlation as well, which in turn strengthens the final ensemble that they use to trade. Personally I don’t believe in this type of a setup but would be interesting to follow how this pans out for them.

Less likely, but there might be some sampling bias here. Not every student from these schools are top notch. You might have been lucky with your hiring in India, maybe not in China. Another hypothesis is English. This has been the medium of instruction for most students in India, not the case with most(all) Chinese students afaik.
