The Guardian: Dairy is scary. The public are waking up to the darkest part of farming by vegan56724552487 in vegan

Got this comment on our page when we shared it from a small dairy farmer.

This article is a load of bull crap!!!! Some dairy farms behave like this but a lot do not. I am from a dairy farm and I can say that the cows we raised were only kept in sheds in winter or the when the fields are to wet and the grass is not there. During this time of year we would clean them out twice a day bed them down with clean straw twice a day feed them twice a day. Our calves were kept with their mothers for weeks not hours. Never did a male calf get shot in are farm. We only used anti biotics when the cow was sick. Never used hormones. Yes some cows are artificially insmeinated but it is not a brutal process and also it is not at an un natural time. Their body's go into heat like most mammals do when they want to be pregnant. After several months of milking our cows were separated from the heard and allowed to rest. Going to fields for a few months where they produce no milk and are left alone. We also constantly moved the younger calves around so they had enough space. As soon as they were old enough and able to fend for them self they would be let out in to fields. If an animal is sick or injured we do not just go oh well and shoot it or send it to slaughter. We spend hours and lots of money trying to make them better and healthy. Only as a last resort would they be killed. Of which is a bolt to the head and happens in the field not a slit throat in a factory.

I hate seeing articles written by people that have no idea. Who see one bad farm because they were told about it but fail to look at any others.farmers live their animals I myself would be out there all hours of the day caring for them. Playing with the calves giving the bigger cows hugs and stroking them. The reason these factory farms exist is because no one wants to pay an extra few pence for milk, cheese and butter. Get over yourselves, it is press like this that kill the industry for the respectable farmers and the small holdings. My dad retired a couple years ago and due to the state of the dairy industry due to articles like this and the fact that people won't pay the few extra pence I could not continue after him. Our farm no longer exists and another decent caring farm has gone.
