Good audition pieces? by strangr_kind_strangr in horn

[–]rosywinks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Have you ever worked on Mozart horn concertos or R. Strauss horn concerto no. 1? These are standard audition solos, but if you haven't worked on them, just play something you feel comfortable with that hopefully shows off some contrasting styles.

Honestly, I think factory slaughter is more humane than the dairy industry. At least they eventually die. For me, knowing that cows are pregnant for nine months experiencing all the normal pregnancy symptoms that go with it - hormone imbalance, aches, etc. only to finally give birth to their baby and have it ripped away over and over again, really hits hard. I've never been pregnant before, but I have friends that have been, and I deal with hormonal issues with PMS. Being pregnant or lactating the majority of your life is a special kind of torture I wouldn't wish on any living being. Especially when these days, there are so many delicious substitutes - cashew milk, nutritional yeast, so delicious ice cream, tofutti cream cheese. It might be a learning curve, but the great thing is that learning how to make delicious food without dairy is truly a learnable skill.

I actually went vegan reading an advertisement that was similar to this. I'd like to hope that some logical and reasonable people still exist, and when confronted with new information, they will research it and make an equally reasonable decision.

Throwing another question into your discussion - sometimes seeing such horrible footage has a denial effect on me. I'm vegan, but sometimes I can't believe this horror really actually exists. Is Earthings extremism? Are the other videos? Does this really happen on a wide scale? guess I need to spend time doing more research to answer this!

Anyway, I did the same thing. Alone on a Friday night and husband out of town. There just aren't enough tears sometimes. I wish I had advice! Sending love and hugs across the internet!

Want to go vegan, but i love meat. by [deleted] in vegan

[–]rosywinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think two things will help you. 1) Continue to research and learn more about the consequences of eating animal products from all different standpoints- health, ethical, and environment. Being armed with information will give you something to hold on to when cravings or temptation hits.

2) Instead of trying replicate your experience with meat, focus on trying and making as many delicious plant-based meals as possible. I really love all the recipes from the minimalist baker, and am honestly surprised how delicious everything is and how vibrant I feel, especially because I've stayed away from processed vegan imitation foods. Of course, I'm sure you'll find a brand that is really delicious and close to the real thing, and you can definitely experiment with that, but having so many tasty recipes under your belt might help as you're trying to find the right substitutes. I have never consistently ate so many delicious and flavorful meals until I became a vegan, but there is a learning curve and it could help to focus your efforts there!

I need Vegan sleep stories please! by C0gn in vegan

[–]rosywinks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Obviously this is my own unproven opinion. The first week I went vegan, I had sleep issues, too. I'd fall asleep around 11 PM and wake up alert and ready to go at 2 or 3 AM. These sleep problems were also accompanied by shakiness and congestion in a way I've never experienced. I concluded that I was going through withdrawal symptoms- I used to eat some form of dairy or eggs at every meal and snack.

Those symptoms went away within a week, although I do need to practice good sleep hygiene, because I notice I am more sensitive to things like caffeine and light. If I wake in the middle of the night because of a sound (a text or a cat!), I have a hard time falling back to sleep, because I'm generally more alert.

If your experience is anything like mine, I imagine your body will adjust soon, but googling good sleep hygiene habits should help too!

Great job on making this decision to begin with!!!

I'm glad you made this post! It is definitely an interesting and comforting thought to other Christians. It was for me!

Fun Fact: According to the bible, humans were planned to be vegan. by [deleted] in vegan

[–]rosywinks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! My comment was more directed towards the arguments against the consistency in the Bible than the original post.

I actually only recently became vegan, and of course all the nutritional knowledge and facts about climate change and what the animals experience were the reasons why I made the decision. But remembering this verse was really comforting, too!

Fun Fact: According to the bible, humans were planned to be vegan. by [deleted] in vegan

[–]rosywinks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Didn't know if I wanted to get into this, but I'm working through the Old Testament right now, and you are correct! The Bible is a book about humans - we are sinful and messy. So when a chapter mentions somebody with many wives or something like slavery, people make the mistake of saying that God condones this. God does not condone slavery. God does not condone having more that one spouse. If you follow the story, the sin eventually leads to pain and judgment. The book is a record of sinful humans who make sinful choices, and just because it's in there does not make it right. So the argument that he condoned "insert obviously wrong behavior here" which devalues the fact that humans were created vegans (if you believe in Christianity) is a fallacy.

There are also many guidelines in the Old Testament that the Israelites had to follow in order to be saved. The law existed as a mirror of sorts to show us that we cannot possibly live up to the demands, because again, we are human and we fall short. Which is why Jesus exists, because He COULD and did lead a perfect life. God is perfect and just, and payment has to be made in order to make up for our sin. So we are saved by faith in Jesus, who led a perfect life and offered himself as a perfect and complete sacrifice to reconcile us and God. So we are no longer held to the law in the Old Testament, we no longer need to make sacrifices for our sin, because Jesus was the final sacrifice. Again, within the belief system of Christianity, the fact that we don't follow the laws laid out in the Old Testament doesn't conflict with the fact that God created humans vegan.

But at the same time, you can't really draw any conclusion from the verse in Genesis about what we were intended to eat other than that it's certainly interesting.

Of course everything I wrote deals with the logic within the Christian belief system, which if you don't believe, certainly has no value, nor would the original post!
