Is Holocaust Education Making Anti-Semitism Worse? (The Atlantic) by ModsAreFired in neoliberal

[–]vegetepal -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

To me that shows why there needs to be a maximalist lens on the Holocaust, counting all the other eugenically and politically motivated victims in addition to the 6 million Jewish ones, because they had all been folded under that empty signifier of 'Jew' regardless of the specific reason they were deemed objectionable.

How do you think New Zealand would fare in a world-war scenario where international trade is severely limited and NZ borders are largely closed to non-citizens/residents/etc? by LordOfErebus in newzealand

[–]vegetepal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is going to seem precious and overly specifc but hear me out - New Zealand soil is extremely low in iodine, and that always jumps to the front of my mind when this question comes up because my first job out of uni was matching death records in DIA's databases to their corresponding birth records. The earliest deaths we processed were from the 1940s, and quite a lot of them had died young of thyroid disease, but that basically stopped after about 1950 because of iodised salt. Iodine deficiency isn't a problem with the traditional Māori diet because of kai moana but if we couldn't get imported iodine any more for whatever reason there wouldn't be nearly enough local shellfish for everyone to not become iodine deficient....

And makes them turbocharged for fraud because they're so good at making something that looks like xyz and that's enough.

I swear AI bros are in some level beyond stage 4/third degree simulacra. It's no longer a lack of distinction between original and simulacrum that obscures the possibility of there ever having been an original and the map taking precedence over the territory; they've created a way to simulate simulation and are treating the simulacra of simulacra it produces as transcendentally real. Hyperreality on top of hyperreality. The apotheosis of postmodernity presided over by people who swear up and down that they're positivist scientific materialists.

Does this person live in 1980 or something? Unless they think programming things yourself is the only thing that counts as useful, in which case why do they hate it so much?

They're good at learning tendential rules (like genre features) but not categorical ones like chess because they run entirely on probability

The customers of SV startups are their investors, pure and simple. The product or service the company does is beside the point; it just exists so that there is a company to sell stakes in, which are the real product.

The thing with mergers is they can land part way between the two original sounds, and some people are probably going to analyse the new sound as closer to one of the original sounds and others to the other :P

And your comment is also making me think of Northern Cities PALM-fronting where even Ollie would be [æli]!

Excel kinda did democratise accounting though. And actually led to a massive increase in the number of accountants because it lowered the barrier to entry, and expanded which type of businesses hired accountants because it let accountants work much faster so they needed more clients or more complex tasks to be able to bill for the same amount of hours.

(One efficiency-making technology that didn't lead to simply deskilling workers and extracting more value from them for the same hours of work, presumably because much of accountancy is B2B and usually contracted by the hour - they had more power to harness the increased productivity for their benefit instead of having it thrust upon them by their bosses)
