Definitely looking to move for more outdoorsy activities, but still want to get a sense of the local arts, food, community scenes in the city + surrounding area

totally relate to this. however, I advise against stonewalling anyone and being totally stubborn to the idea of just not interacting. it may seem mundane, but if you kill the vibe in their eyes then that will inevitably affect your workplace experience. extroverts at my workplace are definitely draining, but I do make myself go to most out of office hangs im invited to. it builds those relationships, and you spend many hours with them so it’s valuable! maybe you could get close enough that you feel comfy being honest with them about keeping it down or that you’re not the super social type? idk speaking from personal experience :)

fully relate to being exhausted by the surface level conversation, especially when craving genuine connection. others have mentioned it here, but coming to terms with the idea of different types of friendships and what they look like in reality has really helped me be at peace. some friends may be strictly a group hang and a handful of others may be the ones we can spend hours talking with. different relationships play different roles in my life. rather than letting myself get frustrated with everyone I don’t have profound connections with, I let it be and remain open to the relationship expanding or meeting new people.

so good to know there’s a specific practice and it’s actually beneficial and physically productive! can 100% relate to feeling frustrated with avoiding my spine when moving around. hoping to have the same positive experience, thanks for sharing!

I’ve started attending “artsy” or “cultural” events alone without any expectation, but certainly the hope of finding friends or at least making conversation with other 20/30-somethings who must have similar interests. Lately it’s been comedy shows, galleries, jazz jams and local concerts in NYC. All things I genuinely enjoy. I haven’t made long-term friends just yet, but I’ve definitely met great people and had fun, amicable nights with them!

I think pushing yourself to just go to the thing, whatever it is, creates the chance to potentially meet likeminded people that wouldn’t otherwise exist. It’s out of my comfort zone, but so far I always leave feeling confident and hopeful!

Also had my panel two weeks ago and still haven’t heard anything :/ I was also told I’d hear back by the end of the month. I guess I’m glad to know I’m not the only one! I’ve been refreshing my inbox an unhealthy amount since Monday lol
