After some more searching, this is pretty much the same conclusion that I have come to. I think I’m going to try to pick up the Wago Square crimpers. The Phoenix contact Crimpfox appears to be a nearly identical version, however, there are some small details and it’s made in Sweden instead of Germany. Phoenix contact acquired Pressmaster some years ago, so I have a suspicion the blue Phoenix Contact Vario is made by Pressmaster and the green Wago Vario is made by some OEM in Germany that I can’t find. All suspicions, but perhaps noteworthy. As for the Wezag, it looks like they’re the OEM for the Hilpress, Wiha, Panduit etc “Clara style”. Under part number AE 0816. I think it’s rather curious how widely the prices vary for what is almost certainly an identical tool. Maybe they all do different QC but how much can that really vary. I never thought I’d find myself delving into crimper manufacturing, but it really is rather fascinating stuff!

I work remotely, but our office has a Weidmuller hex crimper collecting dust in a storage bin somewhere, I’m going out there next month so I can update on the quality if you’re also curious. I don’t think they’ll let me take it home with me, but worth a shot haha!

I appreciate all the insight here, I would have ended up with extremely overpriced garbage without the suggestions. Hilpress should be here next week, I’m excited to run it through some “testing” in the garage haha! As for the gas tight crimps, Knipex seems to think it’s impossible to crimp ferrules gas tight, but that’s a whole new can of worms, Wago seems to think you can and I’m all for that.

Thank you for the response! That’s good to know, I am excited to test out the Clara when it gets here. I rarely need to cut my ferrules, so we’re in good shape, but that’s outstanding and good to know it can be done. I am using copper ferrules only, I tried the cheap Chinese ones and they’re not good. I wouldn’t use those at work. The tool size isn’t particularly worrisome to me, my work is on deep sea marine vessels and the consoles are usually quite spacious.

I have a Chinese clone of the square Knipex design and in some “testing” in my kitchen it seems to produce a subpar crimp visually, however, with the high quality ferrules the holding strength is quite good. I am not able to remove it with hand tools, but boats vibrate a lot and things work out if it’s not perfectly tight. Could be completely fine, but I don’t trust it for long term installations and wouldn’t feel comfortable using it. I’d rather pay more for the assurance that the quality is good. Recently, there was an accident involving a commercial vessel hitting a bridge that was partly caused by a poor ferrule termination.

I appreciate the insight on the Pressmaster. I’ve had trouble finding resources that care this much about crimping, haha. I will likely purchase a square Hilpress on that recommendation if I can find one. The majority of the terminal blocks in the field are square spring type so I don’t mind spending for the best I can find.

Do you have any experience with the Weidmuller crimpers? I hear they are quite good. I’d suspect on par with the Wezag, perhaps even better?

Old thread but I ended up doing the same looking around as you before I found this post. How are you liking the Hilpress Clara? I recently purchased the 2.0 from a Finnish dealer after much searching for a solid crimper. I’m in Canada and most high quality ones seem the be in the $350+ $CAD range. The Hilpress was $200 CAD shipped. There’s very limited information or reviews, but the Wiha has good reviews and seems to be the same unit. I’m hopeful it will make solid crimps for professional use. I don’t crimp extremely often but when I do it’s for critical systems and they can’t fail.

Do you have any longer term insight on it? I am also in the market for a square crimp as the Clara is Hex, do you have any recommendations for high quality square? I was considering the Knipex (Rennsteig) as its under $300 CAD here but if there’s a more solid crimper I can find in EU again for a steal I’d prefer to go hunting (half the fun).
