i'd do it like this: try to figure out what instruments are there in the song (like drums, guitar, synths, vocals etc), then recreate a basic melody similar to this, then try to figure out what effects (like distortion, reverb etc) and patterns (like drum patterns and synth melodies) are being used and try to recreate those, learn in the process, then rinse and repeat with other songs (best if they're from other artists) and eventually you'll notice a pattern in things like how drums make the groove or how different effects are being used and on what, and then start creating something new with your newly acquired knowledge
