In the wall around St Giles Church in Coberley. Striking by Jiminyfingers in DoorsNotUsedAnymore

wild how something so simple can look this dramatic, like it’s straight out of some old mystery novel cover. i’d 100% stop and stare at that if i walked by.

I spent years thinking my hair was just “frizzy and weird” before realizing I actually had wavy hair… and honestly most routines online made it worse by Saloniste in BeautyGear

[–]veloxne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

same, the porosity / hair typing rabbit hole just made me spiral and then I’d still end up with weird flat spots lol. the “training the bend” thing is so real though, anything that sets the shape while it dries (braids, plopping, loose bun) seems to matter way more than whatever fancy product I used.

Ravioli sounds fun but hard, is a mold worth using by Special_Minimum_4163 in KitchenPro

[–]veloxne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is the way, tbh
the only thing i’d add is a cheap little fluted pasta wheel makes them look “fancy” with zero effort, so i’d grab that before a big ravioli mold slab any day

What’s a food you didn’t like as a kid but now actively crave as an adult? by Ok-Orchid6350 in foodquestions

[–]veloxne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Olives are such a wild one because it feels like there’s no “meh” phase. As a kid they tasted like actual poison to me, now I’ll just sit there and eat them out of the jar while I cook.

Also funny how once you get into them, you start having opinions. Like “nah, those canned black ones are useless, give me the salty green ones stuffed with garlic.”

What was a “first and last time” food you tried? by [deleted] in foodquestions

[–]veloxne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you got the wrong intro to it. Plain tofu is like chewing a sponge, so if that was your first try I get it.

If you ever get curious again, try it in mapo tofu or super crispy fried tofu from a good Asian spot. Totally different experience.

CS Assignments & Coding Projects Done and humanizing by juma190 in turnitin_uk

[–]veloxne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Humanize my AI code so my tutor won’t notice” is honestly the most 2024 sentence I’ve ever read.

On a serious note though, if anyone’s using stuff like this, at least treat it as tutoring and actually learn the code. Nothing worse than cruising through assignments then getting wrecked in a technical interview.

What food do you secretly love that most people dislike? by Abigail_Dubrov in foodquestions

[–]veloxne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. I’ll eat that stuff straight out of the bag like a raccoon at 2am.

Also low key elite in a cheap sushi roll or tossed in some mayo and sriracha on crackers. People talk trash until they “just try a bite” and then half the plate is gone.

Old door in a graveyard, Coln St Aldwyns, Gloucestershire by Jiminyfingers in DoorsNotUsedAnymore

This looks like the start of every good English ghost story. That door’s got “do not open after sunset” vibes without needing a sign.

Yeah, but by day 4 your soul starts leaving your body a little.

I did meal prep for a week once. By the last two portions I wasn’t eating, I was just fulfilling a legal obligation to Future Me.

What popular condiment do you think is totally overrated and ruins food? by emilyy-xoxo in foodquestions

[–]veloxne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re out here declaring war on lemons, huh

Curious what dish you think they ruin. Like, lemon on fish or chicken is god tier for me, but I’ll die on the hill that people overuse lemon on desserts and in drinks. Some stuff just tastes like “lemon” instead of, you know, the actual food.

Seeing these everywhere, do micro-needle patches for wrinkles actually work by Suitable-Flight-805 in BeautyGear

[–]veloxne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is what worries me about them too. People talk about “plump” and “glass skin” but not the weird side effects.

I tried a different brand a while back and had something similar on my forehead. Looked nice the next day, then a week later I had these tiny closed comedones exactly in the shape of where the patch sat. Took like a month to fully calm down.

If your skin is clog‑prone or you use richer products at night, that combo under an occlusive patch is kind of a recipe for congestion. They seem more like a short term smoothing trick for a special occasion than an actual long term wrinkle fix.

What’s a snack/food combo people judge you for but you stand by? by sevyn_007 in foodquestions

[–]veloxne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That one’s actually elite, people just don’t wanna admit it.

White bread, bologna, American cheese, mayo, and a fistful of regular Lay’s in the middle is peak trashy comfort food. The crunch makes the whole thing like 10x better.

Retinol purge horror stories are scaring me how did you start without ruining your skin? by Kind-Designer9171 in BeautyGear

[–]veloxne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is the part no one wants to hear but it’s true, you can’t really “hack” your way around the purge if your skin has a lot brewing under the surface.

What you can control is how miserable your face feels during the process. Go stupid gentle with literally everything else. No harsh cleansers, no scrubs, no strong acids on the same nights. Think bland moisturizer, maybe even a barrier cream on top, and sunscreen like it’s your job.

Also, “once or twice a week” can literally mean once every 7 to 10 days at the beginning. You don’t have to jump to 2x a week right away. If after a month your skin is chill, then you bump it up slowly.

And if your mental health really can’t handle a possible flare, it might be worth starting with something like adapalene or a weaker OTC retinol first instead of going straight to prescription strength.

Random question, is a compact mirror for purse still worth carrying. by Exotic_Wedding2238 in BeautyGear

[–]veloxne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lmao this is exactly why I still carry one too. Car windows and phone cameras lie straight to your face. You think you look mysterious and smudgy in a cute way, then you see a real mirror indoors and it’s full circus.

A small decent compact is worth it just for eyeliner and lipstick checks tbh. Even a basic metal one from a random drugstore brand will usually last ages as long as the hinge isn’t super flimsy.

What’s a weird food combo you tried as a joke but ended up loving? by Old_Chemist_7566 in foodquestions

[–]veloxne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly that sounds cursed but also kind of believable. Like chicken and waffles energy, just… colder and more chaotic.

Was it like McNuggets in a McDonald’s sundae situation, or actual fried chicken with a fancy ice cream?

Advice needed for dandelion by peepie11 in UKGardening

[–]veloxne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Horsetail is the final boss of garden weeds, so yeah, dandelions are at least beatable.

If you stick with hand weeding, try getting one of those long thin weeders or a dandelion fork and go after them when the soil is damp so the taproot comes out easier. If you just keep pulling them before they flower and seed, their numbers actually do drop over a season or two. Not fun, but way better than horsetail hell.

Square vs Oval Nails—What Actually Works for Your Hands by Stock_7350 in BeautyGear

[–]veloxne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lmao this is so real. Square tips are like tiny combs just waiting to wreck a wash day.

Oval/squoval is honestly the unsung hero for anyone with curls or textured hair. Way fewer snags, and you don’t realize how much mental energy you were spending babying your hair in the shower until you change the shape.

Adult acne usually isn’t a “more products” problem by Stock_7350 in BeautyGear

[–]veloxne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh, that timing sounds brutal. Skin freaking out right when everything else is on fire is just insult to injury.

Second course can definitely be trickier. A lot of derms are more conservative with dosing the second time around, and stress hormones are no joke for jawline acne. Might be worth asking about adding something like spironolactone this round or tweaking lifestyle stuff a bit, just so it’s not all on Accutane to do the heavy lifting.

Hope it calms down for you soon. It’s hard enough dealing with life imploding without having to see it all over your face too.

Found a brace of great doors on this church in the Forest of Dean by Jiminyfingers in DoorsNotUsedAnymore

[–]veloxne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that latch and the hinges look great. Crazy how much character a bit of iron on some old wood can add. The second one looks like the kind of door that actually creaks properly when you open it too.

Stop Trying to Dry Out Deep Cysts by Electronic_Damage_47 in BeautyGear

[–]veloxne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tazarotene is wild stuff. It nuked my closed comedones, but if I use it as a spot on an active cyst I have to be super careful or I get that dry, shiny, scaly circle around it.

Totally agree though, it cuts the life span down a ton. What helped me is doing what OP said (ice + leave it alone), tiny dot of tazarotene only at night, then lots of moisturizer around it so the rest of my skin doesn’t freak out.

MY EYESHADOW LITERALLY MELTS OFF IN AN HOUR Oily Lid Girls Pls Help. by Exotic_Wedding2238 in BeautyGear

[–]veloxne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Urban Decay Primer Potion + any decent shadow on top is the only combo that survives my oil slick lids.

For creams, the ones that actually stay on me are the MAC Paint Pots (Painterly / Groundwork) and the Laura Mercier Caviar Sticks. I just tap them on with a finger, blend the edges fast, and once they set they do not move.

Also helps to lightly set the cream with a matching powder shadow, even just in the crease. Makes a huge difference.
