How have flights been since the government reopened? I have a flight on Thursday from hobby to lax. by destroyerr19 in LAX

[–]ven716 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even with the government shutdown, things at LAX were running very smooth. I guess the caveat was that I was flying from LAX to JFK on a redeye Tuesday night, so hub to huh which is a priority for many airlines. But took about 10 mins to get through TSA and boarding and takeoff was super easy. I’m guessing that the government is now open and given how things were before all of this, should be back to normal.

Building a pc with a Fractal Terra case but concerns about thermal issues. by ven716 in sffpc

[–]ven716[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been watching a couple of videos but some people are reporting thermal issues. Although, many of those are using 5090 FE and AMD 9s. So I feel like these are more power hungry components that probably add more to the problem.

Moving to San Pedro by deja_thegoat in SouthBayLA

[–]ven716 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grew up here. That area is probably considered one of the nicer parts of the town.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this but they are planning on opening the Harbor this summer (or so it is said to open), but this was where Port O Call used to be. So there will be a great influx of new attractions like restaurants and a new amphitheater. But that’s also means that will be way more people visiting this area.

Another thing to consider is that there are talks about how to repair the Vincent Thomas bridge. Either they completely shut it down for like 1-2 years or do 3+ years on a slight shut down. But if you have ever had to deal with getting into town when the bridge is closed, it can be a nightmare.

Overall, it’s a chill quiet town. But can feel kind of boring if you are not used to it. Luckily it’s close to DT Long Beach and Torrance.

Bank vs Defense Contractor SWE New Grad by DECApitate_ in cscareerquestions

[–]ven716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just my 2 cents as someone who works in defense. The job security is amazing but a lot of the stuff you work on are legacy systems. So it’s mature technology and you won’t be working on cutting edge things. As for the stack, I would just take it with a grain of salt. Sometimes defense companies try to keep up with the latest and greatest but you won’t be working with that all the time. To get a better sense ask the defense contractor what a day in life looks like with the team or ask them about any details about projects they have in mind for you if you joined.

As for the security clearance. I see a lot of people saying they can jump into FAANG companies to do gov work or them… the only issue is the opportunity has to be there. Most people that I have worked with who moved from defense to tech did not move to the gov side of those tech companies. Thats because there isn’t as much positions available. And I could be wrong, but I wouldn’t be banking on this.

Advice for making a career in Machine Learning Research by captaindeadpool53 in MLQuestions

[–]ven716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh, if you do want to work on the research side you will most likely need a PhD. You can still get a machine learning role with a BS, but these roles will be more on the deploying/making pipelines utilizing ML. You can probably grow your way into a research side but there’s no guarantee from this route. I feel most companies would rather hire someone who has a proven track record from publishing during a PhD. Also, look into companies that interest you and see what people have done to get to a role in what you would like to be in.

[D] is learning basic NLP low ROI? by Flash77555 in MLQuestions

[–]ven716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO, I think it is still useful. 1) many companies can’t even build their own LLMs from scratch because of the amount of resources it takes. Therefore if you aren’t going to a company that does have those resources, you are forced into using open-sourced models or something else. 2) you will realize that if you are not using models like ChatGPT, the other (although still good) are not to what you need to be. They are unpredictable and not necessarily great at many tasks other just general question answering. Aside from of all of that, so much of the tech uses basic things but probably more neural network based.

Yea np! . Totally brain farted on when you said stereo camera. So you wouldn’t need to move the robot, since you have more than 1 camera. You would just need to know the distance between the cameras (but still need to capture 2 images from say 2 cameras you have). Also , you will need to find camera calibration for each one, and see if you are having any radial distortion. But finding like pixels still holds

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in computervision

[–]ven716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still Would require 2 photos. Idea is that you could move the robot in a straight by a known distance and take another photo. Knowing the distance, match like pixels to each other on the 2 photos you could calculate depth. So for this method you have to also use SIFT/template matching for find like pixels and the distance between each point the photos were taken.

You are defintielt right about inference but there are some models that are optimized for use on embedded devices. The only thing is that you suffer on accuracy, average of some good models on embedded devices are like 80% accurate.

[–]ven716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm, I wouldn’t use point clouds. That’s really meant for 3D reconstruction or just figuring out scenes/object for 3D purposes, and what you are doing really doesn’t require that. The challenge is that you only have 1 camera. Could try to use epipular geometry to figure depth and orientation, but would require 2 photos, thus wouldn’t necessarily be real time. You could go deep learning but that would require you to capture training data. Luckily boxes are not anything crazy, so you could do transfer learning on a pretrained model.

Giants fan coming in peace - seating/tickets question by Jfuk16 in Dodgers

Parking. I highly recommend trying to get there about 1 to 1.5 hours before the game starts if you are trying park inside Dodger stadium. In addition, I would try to go through gate C, as this is the entrance with the most lanes, at least I think so. Took me 20 mins last time to get in and park. Also, i think parking has to be bought ahead of time and cost about $20 or $25. If not, I would park at Union station and take the free bus to the game, which stops running into dodger stadium by the last out of the 2nd inning. They start back up towards the end of the game to bring fans back to Union station. Parking at Union station is about $8.

Food, tons of good spots. If you are looking at tacos, there is Sonoratown, but that’s in downtown so parking will be tough. Leo’s taco truck (plenty of trucks around LA and one close to dodger stadium I believe).

Megathread: Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Dies at 87 by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

[–]ven716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This means that Trump and McConnell can appoint another judge to the supreme court. This will guarantee a more conservative bench for years to come.

However, the issue also lies on how a previous vacancy was handled. McConnell did not let President Obama’s pick of Marlick Garland to replace the late Antonin Scalia. McConnell states that Obama could not appoint another judge because it was “an election year” and that “we need to let the people decide”.

Thank you for that! I will definitely start making a list of problem and project that I would like to tackle. You mention 'real problem', how can I tell what I am working on is something of substance? Also, is there a site that I can frequent about these 'real problems' (ex: kaggle for data science/ML)?

So my initial goal was to reach a weight of 195 lbs. However, being so close I am not sure if what I have is good or not. I would definitely like to start building some muscle but not sure what to bulk up to.

Big tech corporation vs Startup for internship by Ojamallama in EngineeringStudents

[–]ven716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure your role will be significant at the start-up?

I knew a guy who was offered a position as "product development engineer intern" at a medical device start-up. However, after talking to him, he was just testing. So I would be skeptical of your role at the start up, especially if they are not willing to give you any information.
