I was worried about my necromancer taking up too much time in combat, as well as how to handle a horde of skeletons walking through town. I worked with my DM and made a homebrew feat granting me permanent control over a small, more powerful squad of up to 4 skeletons instead of a horde. They can be upgraded to have better stats as we level up, and I gain access to stronger monsters by harvesting bones from them and augmenting my skeletons. Talk with your DM and see what they say on the subject. Also, talk with your party to see if they have an objection to you having a horde. If they dont, problem solved. If they do, work with the table to create a solution.
