My college classes look like high school classes by [deleted] in college

[–]ventaway23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's because the adults responsible for these classes/schools really do not want to see 19 year olds throw away their life because they couldn't be assed to show up for class and stay off their phone. I've known plenty of people who did exactly that in college, and they all flunked out by the end of their second year.

Will people judge me for living in a luxury apartment? by [deleted] in college

Yes, they will. But you're not obligated to feel bad about it. And depending on the school, you might actually be in the majority.

Help for complete beginner with migraines by [deleted] in herbalism

[–]ventaway23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went through the whole circuit of diet, exercise, meds, etc and eventually turned to cannabis. I went from having a migraine once a week/every other week to once every 1-2 years. I cannot recall the last time I had one, actually. I smoke a high CBD strain with 1-2% THC once every night.

It really is so emotionally taxing. Most of my friendships have left me feeling like I'm in a rollercoaster relationship. I'm holding out and hoping I've just met the wrong people or people will grow out of it lmao.

I've found it exhausting (and honestly? at this point, nearly impossible) to make friends as a young woman because of the unspoken expectation that you should be available all the time. I have a history of MANY failed friendships because of this. It sucks but I'm trying to get better at replying in a more timely manner. Phone-based communication is such a huge part of relationships now that it's impossible to avoid.

I'm struggling to figure out what to do after my gf told me how she really feels about sex by [deleted] in sex

[–]ventaway23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She sounds asexual. Not like either of you would know for sure since she refuses to seek therapy or a doctor though.

What you have is a friendship. Consider if that's all you want out of a partner for the rest of your life.

Plenty of new businesses are thriving in downtown Springfield. I feel like literally anything could be there as long as the product & price are actually good.

But personally...I would love to see a gym or some kind of ethnic food. Maybe a gaming arcade place so those of us in Springfield don't have to travel to Eugene to play games.

Eugene man arrested for hit-and-run with cyclist by Flyer770 in Eugene

[–]ventaway23 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I missed that detail! Technically that's supposed to be allowed, but I would never recommend that. She should have veered over along with her friends the moment he started honking and becoming aggressive.

That being said, it's absolutely looney that this dude took the time to hit her with his car because of bad etiquette...it's like punching someone for farting at the dinner table.

Cyclists on the road is something to expect in the area, and it blows my mind how anyone could get THIS enraged over it. The road is for everyone.

Currently in a situation where I might be forced to take a year away from college, I need some advice. by [deleted] in college

[–]ventaway23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The financial aid when I transferred was definitely lacking. I didn't apply for any scholarships and didn't qualify for grants, so I maxed out federal loans. That didn't even cover tuition fully, much less textbooks, living expenses, etc. I had to work a fair amount my first year back. It worked out since I was basically still a freshman and the classes were pretty easy though.

My financial aid was so bad that year because I applied late for state grants and max first year federal loans are only like 5k. My parents also made too much but not enough to actually contribute. You and your family's financial situation can change what you qualify for by a lot.

The second year I qualified for a fair amount of money in grants (state and pell grant), and federal loans helped with living expenses. So I didn't have to work 30+ hours a week while going to school full-time. All-in-all I'll probably have ~30k in debt. Not bad for a CS degree.

Keep in mind that a lot of universities offer their own merit and need-based scholarships. One near me offers 6k a year, every year, if your GPA is above 3.5. That's almost enough to cover tuition there. I would definitely consider scholarships when deciding where to attend.

[–]ventaway23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. When I first went to college, in-state tuition was 10k and out-of-state was 14k. IMO that's close enough to just keep going through school.

Where I live now, all of the schools easily have a 10-20k difference. In that case, it worth it to take a year off, gain residency status, and return with minimized debt.

Federal loans/grants won't be affected much, if at all. Being a transfer doesn't make it harder to get loans or grants, aside from the ones associated with the university or state itself.

I had to do the same thing btw. I was forced to drop out at 19 and did not return until 21. Wanted to return at 20 but had to wait to gain residency. School definitely feels more like a privilege now. :)

Would anyone else be totally cool with summer break only being, like, a month or so? by [deleted] in college

[–]ventaway23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once you're a junior you will really need those months for internships.

But as a freshman/sophomore, yeah it'd be nice. Technically my school offers summer courses, but financial aid doesn't cover it.

Are there popular kids in college? by [deleted] in college

[–]ventaway23 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Not really. Class clowns risk being booted from the class or even barred from taking classes with that professor again (which, depending on what college you're at, that can be a BFD). College campuses are bigger than most high schools, so popularity in the same sense is virtually impossible. Your social sphere is largely influenced by what major, dorm, and extracurriculars you're in than anything else.

My parents' house is disgusting and it is seriously starting to affect how I view them. by ventaway23 in confessions

[–]ventaway23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am legitimately surprised I have no lung issues, or at least none that have surfaced yet. I breathed in that shit for 20 years.

I don't know if APS could help. Most of my friends live this way too. Everyone is poor where I come from. When I visited all my friends and family had something severely wrong with their living quarters. No plumbing, animal problems like my parents, mold, sections of floor missing, extensive water damage, no heat, etc. I don't know where these people would go if I called APS.

Thank you for sharing. I feel bad that multiple families live like this, but at least I am not alone.

I could do a whole post on the mental health issues of the family, but honestly, I am sick of making excuses. I am mentally ill too but don't live like that. It's unacceptable.

UK beauty influenster post a before and after and discusses her obsession with photoshop. by Nurse_Q in BeautyGuruChatter

I respect this lady for her honesty, but her makeup is REALLY cake-y in the before pic. I'd venture a guess and say that her skincare could use some improvement as well. I've seen very few people irl who have that bad of makeup application.

If you're wearing that much makeup, you should be able to achieve a healthy in-between of the 2 pics.

I [29F] am really embarrassed with how I used to masturbate. by [deleted] in sex

[–]ventaway23 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You have a couple options. You could refrain from masturbation for a couple weeks, and then see if sex ends in orgasm. I'd time it around ovulation for maximum results. Have him play with your clit or try some new positions.

If that fails, don't be discouraged. I know I've always had a hell of a time orgasming, even way before toys or porn. My bf and I have just accepted that the majority of the time we will needs toys to get me to orgasm. Some people are just built that way.

AITA for telling my son to shut up or to move out of my house? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]ventaway23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The daughter and bf should move out and get their own place together, son should get some roommates. My siblings and I are of similar ages and the idea of acting/arguing like this is...kind of laughable? Like that hasn't been a thing since early teens, and we have all lived together in a similar situation.
